Really bad news for the family involved and totally avoidable. I'd like to know who this person is and hope they would become infamous and held up as an example. Can only hope too that true remorse is shown. A good case for the use of CV passports and restricted access for those who refuse to wear a mask or get vaccinated. Is it worth alerting the press without naming names to get some investigation going?

It's their summer for goodness sake. I'd be seriously hacked off if I was a New Zealand citizen.

Yes I don’t think we should be benchmarking our response against that of NZ (or Australia)

Jacinda’s popularity has plummeted in the polls, for sure, but she’s still miles ahead of any potential rivals.

What's being reported as a lockdown isn't according to the NZ PM. New Zealanders reportedly more receptive to CV-19regulations than many other countries
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01...e-restrictions-after-omicron-spread/100776154 which also covers the OZ situation.
"In an attempt to slow further spread of the Omicron variant, Ms Ardern said the country would move to a red light setting under its COVID-19 protection framework."
"Ms Ardern said the red light setting was not a lockdown and schools and businesses could remain open."
More info which includes useful links and numbers eg 93.8% double vaccinated 95.8% at least one dose

I think that her influence will be far wider than New Zealand. I think she is setting the template for a new generation of politicians and is someone who Nicola Sturgeon would love to emulate. This style of politician will be what we can anticipate seeing in the UK in future and I think the First Minister has been very canny in this respect.

I have been quite intrigued by the conflicting reports regarding the potency of future waves of Covid. There was an announcement yesterday by WHO that Europe has now seen the worst of the pandemic and that future strains are less likely to be as serious. This has been the stance pushed in the media until it almost seems like a mantra so i was intrigued on Sunday when a British scientist stated that there is no foundation for this theory and that it is equally the case that the virus still has the potential to mutate into something more sinister. Up top of this, Sky has also reported on Sunday morning that there was a new strain found in the South east of UK which was a cause of concern (it even gave is a reference B.S.2) but this story seems to have petered out. We were talking about this at work yesterday and a colleague said that he had a friend who was in the medical profession who had explained to him that viruses mutate in order to become more effecive. Those viruses which do not mutate are the ones which are of more concern because they are already operating at an optimum. The example he gace was Ebola.

I feel that the restrictions have been relaxed about a month too early. We should have waited until the worst of the winter was over and the infection levels were back to below the 30,000 / day infection pre-Omicron. Yesterday's mumber seemed indicative that any recovery had stalled and the number of new infections had plateaued. The UK politicians are making decisions based on popularity. I think issues such as shutdowns are probably over-the-top but simple directives like wearing face masks and working from home still seems sensible,

I've read similar re the possibility of a more virulent mutation and B.S. 2 and agree that the deregulation is to early. I'm looking at the Eurostar schedule for mid April to mid may but have concerns about a surge in infections causing a change in travel regs and my personal safety.

I'd include the use of Corona passports, we and visiting family used them with no problems before the shutdown here in the Netherlands. A statement is due later today which may allow bars and restaurants to open probably with restrictions.
This site useful for any thinking about coming to Europe it has a country by country guide to current regulations. https://www.euronews.com/travel/2022/01/17/what-s-the-latest-on-european-travel-restrictions latest update yesterday.

With you on the restrictions being lifted too soon.
The following is a quote from Dr David Nabarro, the WHO’s special envoy for Covid-19. “We may be just passing the halfway mark, of the pandemic, with several new variants still to emerge.”
In response to the people here saying that we should learn to live with it , like we do with flu, he says. “I keep wondering what the people who make these amazing predictions know that I and my colleagues in the WHO don’t know. We are not saying that this should be considered to be like flu or indeed like anything else. It’s a new virus and we must go on treating it as though it is full of surprises, very nasty and cunning.”

This is the sort of reality check that those who support complete deregulation don't want to see.

    I disagree.

As terrible as that story is, these kinds of isolated cases aren’t a good reason to give up fundamental freedoms.

Vaccine mandates and covid passports are wrong, and once they are in they won’t go away.

In this case it was reckless endangerment by an entitled twat. She infected not only her father but other residents and a nurse.
    Fundamental bullshit.

Of course, but this is a simple case of her not following the rules.

Doesn’t mean you need to throw the baby out with the bath water and advocate for everyone losing their freedom.

That would be equivalent to banning all saints fans for life because one fan hurled a racist insult

Meanwhile, over 2,000 people are dying in the UK every week from Omicron, but sure, we need our freedoms.

No, they're not wrong what fundamental freedoms are infringed? See Chilco's post, that woman should have been checked, vaxxed and tested before entry. Vaccine certificates have been in use for years. I had yellow fever. polio, tetanus, diptheria, typhoid, hep A & B and rabies in the nineties, all updated as required since the first jabs. Corona passes are in use throughout Europe and elsewhere. As I posted before we and visiting family have used coronacheck here in the Netherlands with no inconvenience at all, We'll need to use them for international travel l later this year as have friends holidaying abroad recently,

Vaccines have saved millions of lives and will continue to do so. There are ongoing programs for a number of diseases including malaria benefiting from the covid vaccine program breakthroughs.

Our plans to come over end of April/May are on hold we'll see how wholesale deregulation in England goes. A trip to Verona and Lake Garda is an alternative corona passes needed to travel of course.
