Well in my case it was a Ford Anglia not very glamorous. But those 105 E engines were the bees knees. It was a 65 and rusted to bits around me in a little over 3 years. Must have changed every part in the damn thing the engine though never let me down. Especially bad were the brakes spent many a miserable hour undern eath the car bleeding the brake cylinders. The brake cylinders would leak all the time. Happy times.

Well I see that its 283 miles. Say average 60 non stop which was possible late at night with very little traffic on the road then possible in 6 hours but probably more like 6.5 to 7 hours.

It would have been going some given that most cars back then would have been pushed to get to 70. Even a 3.5 litre Rover, a car beyond the means of most was pushed to get above that speed. I know someone who came back from Torquay after not getting out of the ground until half past five and dropping a couple of people off on the way back was parked up and in his pub in Brid before 10.45pm. I have been to games with him and could he shift but always felt safe with him. More so than with others who drove a lot slower,

A Ford Anglia was an aspiration for most young people in those days.

Chazz think you will find it was very easy to get 70 in a car then. Cars were not burdened then by emissions systems. No disrespect but did you own a car then. And the road even though not motorway standards much of the time devoid of traffic. Got to remember that just a few years before then if there was a traffic jam on Hessle Rd and Hessle High road it was more than likely caused by bicycles used by people leaving work from Fishdock on a Saturday morning.

I think you'll find her current husband, Chris Hughes, is less well known than Les Dennis.

You are absolutely correct. I had saved 500 pounds while away for 2.5 years. Spent 475 of it on your a 6 month old Anglia. Bought it from a garage in Cottingham. It was literally my life’s savings. I was 23

We played Exeter on a New Years Day late 80's, I set off at 8.00. Dropped the mother in law off at home in Bristol centre at 10.40 and was in Exeter at 11.50 so without the drop off it could definitely be done in 3 hours or so.

That’s nothing. Once did it with only wheels on the left side. The lads all had to budge over to the left for the whole journey.
