You seem to "know" that we haven't paid a transfer fee since KLD took over
You seem to "Know" that Donald and Methven are still pulling the strings

You can excuse the rest of us for scoffing at your views

In truth although Defoe has been brilliant throughout his career expecting much from any 39 year old is asking a lot. There are obviously clear benefits to signing JD but let’s not pretend it guarantees goals, successful veterans are the exception rather than the norm. He may well be an exception but it’s far from guaranteed.

Plus any decent young players getting signed on new contracts and not being flogged for a pittance. Others being sent out on sensible loans for their development.

None of this happened under Donald. I can't imagine how crap it'd feel to think that we were still being run by him, it's so obviously not true that you'd have to be a masochist to believe it.

he was losing money because we were spending money with the attitude that it was limitless. He had to sell to a couple of chancers because of that mess. That’s why we are here.

Throwing money at problems hasn’t worked. It won’t work. Last winter we signed Ross Stewart and pretty much every signing we’ve made since have worked out so far. Let’s have some faith

Absolutely. Imagine Dan Neil and Elliot Embleton emerging during the Donald regime. Both would have been sold to the first bidder in order to pay the canteen staff's wages for the rest of the season. I don't get why so many people are desperate for this new regime to fail

So let’s hope we sign a talented striker coming towards the top of his game then we’ll get out of it

About a goal every 2 games at rangers didn't he ? He'd definitely score goals at this level if he got the service

Obviously he wouldnt be playing 90 minutes a game, but he'd be a fantastic impact sub playing off Stewart imo.

Chances are he wants 90 minutes if he’s only got 6 months left. He’s bemoaned not playing. Why would he come to be a bit part player?

Defoe would have been a brilliant signing. There’s no getting around that.

But he’s not going elsewhere because of money. If he’s going elsewhere it will be for alternative reasons. And frankly at his stage of his life he’s entitled to pretty much choose any reason he wants really.

If he’s moving for footballing reasons (selection), then are people really saying the club should have guaranteed him whatever he wanted, despite spending a lot of time and effort putting plans and structures in place? Or should we have started rotating him with Stewart or changed our shape to guarantee him starts? It’s easy to say “give him a coaching role”. But the club has a structure, we can’t just be creating roles to attract people. Where does that end?

Maybe he wants an 18 month deal at a high wage. Maybe he scores a few this season but we still don’t go up. Then next year we have a 40 year old striker in league one getting paid too much and struggling.

If he’s moving elsewhere for geographical reasons, should we have thrown money at him to come and play for us? Is that sending a good message to the market and agents that Sunderland are willing to do that? All of a sudden we become the place people come to for the money again. The piss take party comes back.

And should we be letting him live down south doing media duty and then paying for a helicopter to get him back? Again what message does that send about the region? “Come and play for Sunderland - it’s ok if you don’t want to live here!”

He’d have been brilliant. But the club has a plan. The club has standards. And the club has a structure and strategy that needs to be 100% focused on developing us back to where we want to be.

Bringing Defoe back in a way that fits that ethos would have been superb. Breaking it for short term gain would just be the first domino in a potentially damaging chain.

Now if we can convince him to join on our terms - I’ll be over the moon.

I don’t know the ins and outs of why Defoe isn’t coming but I feel like the club have now put huge pressure on themselves to deliver in this market and to deliver promotion. Because if he ends up being a success at his next club (presuming it’s Oxford) and we sign a striker who doesn’t succeed then people are going to be angry and lose faith in our recruitment and the people making the decisions. On the other hand if Defoe fails and our transfers are a success it will also show people why they are paid to make decisions and fans aren’t. I really hope it’s the latter. Big few days in this window ahead.

If Defoe signs an 18 month contract with any league one side he will only have been a good signing if that team is promoted in either of those two seasons and he scored plenty of goals in doing so. Otherwise he is blocking playing time for either a much younger player, or a player that at least has a resale value.

He absolutely might with Oxford. But it actually makes less sense from that perspective for them than it does for us.
