Diane Abbott, the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, tweeted on Tuesday (January 18) that the Home Secretary wants to use sonic booms as a form of deterring asylum seekers from crossing the channel in small boats.

She tweeted: "Our disgraceful Home Secretary Priti Patel wants to use sonic booms against desperate asylum seekers trying to cross the English Channel in small boats"

The tweet has since gone viral and has been retweeted over 2,000 times.

Thousands of Twitter users reacted in dismay and criticised the Home Secretary's supposed ideas.

However, Home Office sources said to The Express that the London MP's claims were "rubbish" and they had "no idea" where they came from.

They reportedly said: "There is absolutely nothing to it whatsoever.

"We have absolutely no idea where it’s come from.

"We don’t recognise the claims or anything like that - it’s rubbish."

A spokesperson told it had "no plans" to use sonic devices to deter migrants.

They said: "As part of our ongoing operational response and to prevent further loss of life at sea, we continue to test a range of safe and legal options to stop small boats making this dangerous and unnecessary journey.

"However, we have no plans to use ‘sonic devices’ to deter migrants and to suggest otherwise is wrong and misleading."
