Oh I don’t doubt it is weird. I find it odd that uefa rules can supersede accounting standards

but it is more likely that the way their rules are worded means that homegrown players don’t meet the definition in the standards. Still seems very odd

But probably one of the many reasons football clubs can end up in such a mess. Or if potential buyers don’t understand properly then they can end up being the complete wrong owners

I imagine that was when we were under the old owners a he looked like a very good option as a free transfer compared to actually having to pay a high fee

I think it's mostly because, as you said earlier, determining value of a player is such a nebulous and subjective concept anyway that it's easier just to treat them on paper as you would a Lincoln Town Car. Note the bit in our books about "[t]he Company does not consider it to be possible to determine value in use of an individual player in isolation as that player cannot generate cash flows on their own".

I don't think this has that great of an effect on owners, good or bad. The vast majority of this is separate from actual cashflow; it has ramifications for taxation, the FFP rules, etc, but you aren't going to go broke from amortization. Conversely, because of the way the accounting works, it's entirely possible to show a net profit on the books while hemorrhaging money. The big problem is having your wage bill be 80% of your turnover or something, but you shouldn't need a swarm of accountants to determine that.

Yeah I can definitely see something happening along those lines & then if he doesn’t get opportunities or doesn’t fire, he’ll be off on another loan.

They play one striker. Havertz and Werner can be played in the withdrawn role. Broja can’t. So he is behind Lukaku for the lone striker role. But Lukaku wasn’t even first choice there

The only way he gets the level of football he both wants and needs is if they sell or loan out Lukaku and probably Werner as well. And I just don’t see it.

And if they do manage to find a buyer for both of them then don’t put it past them at least making a play for Haaland

Just seen a suggestion elsewhere that we have a wage issue that needs addressing for FFP reasons

Kind of shows how bonkers that system is when we are blown out of the water on wages by the majority of the league

This would definitely point to not doing anything with goalkeepers this month.

Long and Forster going opens up some wiggle room in the summer but really not a lot. Especially if we want to offer increases with some extensions

Walcott is a millstone for one more season if his rumoured wage is true. What a terrible decision that was all in all

And then there is McCarthy and Stephens where is really isn’t clear if they signed extensions or not

    https://www.hampshirelive.news/spor...wcastle-tottenham-transfer-window-6426920.amp

This is a strange article. Notably because Everton have signed two players for more than they sold Digne for. And Villa have spent considerably more than 5m and are linked with more players this window

I guess this was based on the most recent available accounts and the clubs know more about their upcoming published numbers ?

I don’t think FF wages are that much short of that anyway and he is going in June

Big questions being asked about how Villa can afford to spend £130-150m a season on new players on very good wages whilst staying within FFP rules. Appreciate they got £100m in from City but it does make you wonder

Football is very dynamic & things change quickly. No one really knows what’s going to be in place next season.

That is the case - but who can afford anything close to the fee they paid for Lukaku who actually want him?

FF’s wages are only £120 a week, but when he signed his contract 30 years ago that was a club record.

LOL, he still won’t be able to catch a cross even after 30 years!
I thought dear Les Read put him on £90k pw which runs out this summer, I think McCarthy is on much less and Big Willy on relative peanuts

We almost definitely don't. We have done the "wave vaguely in the direction of FFP" thing for years now for a variety of reasons ranging from "we need an excuse to not spend to maximize shareholder profit" to "we're actually broke and don't want to outright say it" but you have to work incredibly hard to actually run afoul of FFP.

Even Everton only mildly inconvenienced themselves, despite their herculean efforts, and our wage bill has been effectively flat for a couple years.

I think McCarthy either is or was on 55k a week. The contract extension we offered him was in that region. The Athletic say he signed it. But it hasn’t been announced and we seem to announce all others
