' Become something of an eyesore.' It was an eyesore when it was open, last time I went in the bar in there the toilet floor had a bounce to it and was in danger of collapsing.

****! Not a good sign at all. Hopefully just a short term reaction to public confidence around the covid situation

I'm just reading this thread back as I noticed a new post.

It's possible that it's Covid related but it's also possible that if it's not catering to people's needs (#7729) then it could face extinction fairly swiftly?

For what it's worth. If people think the shopping situation is bleak in Hull they'd do best to steer clear of Glasgow!!!

The shops available in Glasgow are in a completely different league to those available in Hull.

In my years of work you generally get in mature markets the correct number and type of shops , businesses and service companies to meet the local needs - printers etc too many and some disappeared not enough someone spotted an opportunity . Leeds pop 500k , catchment Bradford 350k add Huddersfield , Halifax and al the other rugby towns within 20 miles it’s huge . Plus it’s got a raft of financial and professional business after London .
So when some of you laud Leeds and criticise Hull think about that as a bloody good reason . And as I love my City if you don’t like it here f*** off and live there . My wife is from South Yks and even she after just 5 years tries to spend her money in Hull and with as many independents as possible especially cafes etc
Ultimately this City will have a reasonable range and quality of shops bars etc and it will match the local economy just like Leeds does . Stop comparing and knocking it and try using it a bit more. when you next order on line again remember the people you buy from don’t pay out the costs shops do - so you contribute to the problem . Lastly often when a huge share driven chain shuts a store it’s not because it’s not profitable it’s because it’s not profitable enough Zara quit Hull because it didn’t like the rent rise , not because it wasn’t profitable .
Rant over some will know I love this City warts and all it’s got great geography , grit independence friendly people , great buildings architecture and history - so if you ever venture into the City if Leeds is shut , try looking up at the beautiful detail of the buildings above you - stand on monument bridge on a crisp sunny morning look down Alfred Gelder Street at the awesome statues on the Guildhall roof and tell me it’s not impressive . ok done for now let’s wait for the negatives

Well the last two replies were really well thought out
Chazz it was a bit personal you must have studied my posts to know my family structure - bit worrying that . One daughter is here the other went to uni in London , then Leeds now London for career but intends to come back here in about two years as she can probably afford to buy a house on a mortgage . If ever she’d have said she hates Hull and loves somewhere else she’d have got a non swearing response from me to live where she loves the most . She’s realised many of the qualities of the North and the area . as for SCB surely you could have done better like The poster who sent me the pics did .

About ten years ago and I've no doubt it was better then, than it is now, but it still has loads of premium shops that Hull can only dream of.

Went with my wife two years ago stopped near the arena by the Clyde , we like the street layout , buildings squares etc and yes there appeared to be less good shopping than other big UK cities but enjoyed the restaurants and bars and there was almost enough shopping to meet our needs . Observed two drunken cliches near our hotel swaying about making up words representing the BBC opposite , non polite - like a Rab c Nesbitt episode but good fun listening !!

I visited a couple of months ago.
Far more choices of shops than Hull
Which as Springtiger explained is exactly what you expect due to populations (and visitor numbers from the rest of more rural Scotland)
House of Fraser store is stunning inside (although I understand it has a leaky roof and structural damage which is a worry) and plenty of decent shops in Buchanan Galleries and the other shopping centres etc
