I do recall getting a "small" 4x4 on one trip to the Us. In california i think. It was a ford. they said it was small but i pull up behind a BMW X5 and it was smaller.

    It is rather crazy TBH.

Hugely different State by State, like not even close. Very cheap in SC.
Last time I bought a car it was $300 tax and then various other tag fees, etc. All added up to about $1000. And of course, this is the US, so none of that included in the sticker price.

I know Georgia for example is much more expensive. Like 10-15% of car price at least.

Yes, Ranger is sold here too... I'm assuming roughly the same thing. The Ranger is body on frame instead of unibody, so unless going to be off road a lot isn't as practical... It's more capable as a truck for truck things (but 90% of people who own them just drive them as a car with occasional hauling).

Maverick is smaller than a Ranger.

Will still never get my head around tax not being included in prices over there. Less so with stuff being paid by card these days but before must have been a nightmare to buy things. You know you’ve got $30 pocket money and have to do some maths to work out what you can actually spend

You're not wrong there MITO. I walk down a narrow back alley that leads to a pavement on a main road. The number of times I've nearly been hit by a cyclist or a scooter **** beggars belief. I always stick my head round the corner first and make sure Kenny doesn't dash out. <grr>

TLDR:. I have no idea how much I'm going to pay in taxes until it's rung up.

    - - - -

There is state tax, city tax, county tax. All can be different. I work in different county than I live and long stopped having any idea what tax is where. Some things like food/drink are not taxes some places. Some things are taxed more.

Especially restaurants, never know if paying a large hospitality tax or tax free because its food drink. There are four counties I am in regularly, and no longer have a clue what I pay anywhere.

As an example: If I buy a cup of coffee for $1, I would have no idea if I'll actually be charged $1 or $1.20 until they ring it up for me. It used to at least be consistent. $1.05 when I first came here. Now. **** knows. They've made a stupid system worse.

If I'm out of town in a different state, there is no way of knowing without googling first what the tax rate is. If I were passing through Virginia for example...wouldn't know whether to expect a 5% or 25% tax to be applied to my order... Haven't a clue.

I just don’t understand how anyone thinks that system works? Surely if anyone wants to win an election just turn around and say we’ll make it mandatory that everything must either include the tax or you have 2 prices one with and one without tax on things.

It's because everyone is used to it and thinks its normal. <laugh>
I agree though, I'd much rather a system like back home. It makes much more sense to have price included already.

Some politicians, usually republican, here in South Carolina have tried to do away with Sales Tax altogether. It comes up at every election. Usually by some outsider who doesn't get the party nomination.

I think Florida has no Sales Tax. Usually though no sales tax is designed to help the rich. (No sales tax means the state gets revenue from just income tax instead, and it's easier for rich people to dodge income tax).

I wish we could have carte blanche to know chavs off escooters. They are serious death traps. how there's not a massive toll of doners coming form them I don't know cos they are going that fast they have to hit their heads and be done for.

I configured the BMW I'm interested in on the US site because it's not out in the UK yet so couldn't do it there. Was shocked by how cheap it turned out to be in the US market, this was with a lot of extras too. I thought about maybe getting a pick up truck or SUV but I can't see the point as I'm pretty much the only person ever in my car and I think they are too big really. Agree about buying new and the rip-off of depreciation as soon as you take ownership and start a brand new car up. Especially since technology has really advanced and 'old' cars with good mileage that have been properly looked after aren't really so old and are also often quite desirable due to styling, engine etc these days. What I will say about buying new is you can build and order the exact car you want and don't have to spend ages shopping around or end up compromising on something. Guess it depends how much that's worth / if that's worth anything to you as a consumer.

I wonder if athletes do this thing more often than regular people or we just hear about it more. Seems to be an awful lot of them and it's not like they can't find willing partners I'm sure. Just sick.

Agree, they should have to drive them in the road with a helmet, by law, or they should be banned. People will get killed eventually, if not already, and I'm really only concerned here for vulnerable pedestrians, not the idiots careering at top speed down the pavement

What's funny is Ford doesn't even sell a single commuter car in the US anymore, besides the mustang, a sports model. I think GM only has a couple in the US market now too.

Pretty much, if you want something not an SuV or a truck here now, you have to buy a foreign brand. American brands won't even make them anymore. (At least not for the American market).

Basically yeah............drivers impatience or inability to judge the cyclists speed or whereabouts on the road.

Unfortunatly common. It's something you learn to be cautious of through experience.

In short......2 deaths per week........83 seriously injured per week in GB (source: DoT)
