Newcastle have apparently paid £25m for Wood. That is crazy money for 30 year old Chris wood - but because it is from Burnley it is almost worth it.
I am seeing 20m - still seems like crazy money . That said - double figures in the PL four season in a row for Burnley is nothing to turn your nose up
He has done very well for Burnley, but i can only see him getting that goal return if you play to his strengths like Burnley have.
Ludicrous money. Fair enough it weakens Burnley but that is mental. There has to be better available abroad. Apparently they play each other last game of the season….
Thing is a release clause means no one can demand extra crazy money. It is crazy money but they can’t get stupid. For example they were quoted 30m for a French teenager with almost no track record And 50m for both Schick and Nunez which is just (understandably) taking the piss
Reading a Burnley forum, they seem happy in the main to be rid of Wood. As long as the money is re-invested
That’s the big “if” though in their case what with the American owners and leveraged buy out / debt But Cornet was good scouting so you never know
Also even if it is re-invested this window no guarantee that the signings will work out immediately. Shows how much anyone pays attention to Burnley though. If you were to ask a Neutral who their “best” players were I’d imagine Wood, Tarkowski and Mee would be high up most peoples lists. They’re the ones they all want rid of this window to give them a chance to stay up
Not too dissimilar to pretty much everyone in football saying Vestergaard was our best defender. And then witness his clown like performances for Leicester that will make him something like 6th choice should they ever get everyone fit No idea why they want rid of Mee and Wood. Tarkowski I imagine is because his contract is up and he is not as motivated as they would like ?
This is why I said the fee is crazy. I’ve watched wood in the flesh many times. Never once has he stood out and made me think “he could play at a higher level”. His goals almost always come from a cross or a lapse in concentration. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures and it may work out for them if he bags a few. Who knows.
I'd take that and run were I in Burnley's shoes. At the same time, Newcastle could have done quite a bit worse in terms of striker targets. Wood has been an expected goals darling for a few years (not so much this one, but Burnley's attack is just incredibly anemic), because he's the classic big striker who gets into the right positions...most of his goals are mundane, but that's because he puts himself in places to get easy goals. Newcastle has a bit of creativity to them, but they need someone other than the oft-injured Callum Wilson to stuff them home from eight yards out. It's definitely an overpay, but not the most illogical one they could have made.
Given that they were starting to get linked to Solanke and Nketiah I agree - they could have done worse
Yeah, I actually like Nketiah in the future, but that's not what they need right now. What they need is a consistently okay striker who doesn't get injured with the regularity of Wilson, and Wood is that. And then they need to fix their clusterfuck of a defense.
Ok here me out. I absolutely think Saints could sign Broja permanently from Chelsea, it all depends on how much we offer. Perhaps they want to go all in for Haaland and need the money. This is the wiki on Roman Abramovic personal assistant, and head of transfers Marina Granovskaia
The only way it happens is a buy back clause like with Livramento. I reckon our best chance is a second season on loan, which we absolutely should be trying for.
I would totally be in favor of that. As long as it meant locking him up on a let's say, a 4 yr contract. That will take him up to 23-24 years old, still very young for a top striker.
