We’ve had a lot of very good players over the years, but I believe Gerry was the most technically gifted player to ever wear a Watford shirt. I think I’ve seen every player for Watford in what my Dad calls the “beachball era” of football, and I don’t think you could do those pieces of magic with what Dad refers to as “a proper football”.
He's doing just fine. Please, for the sake of privacy don't ask how I know, but he's okay. He's not well just at the moment obviously but expected to make a full recovery soon.
Damn - I totally forgot there was football this afternoon - was hoping to watch the Grimsby v Halifax match on BT Sport. On a brighter note, I just noticed that the team from my place of birth - Gretna - finally snapped their horrendous run. After losing 19 and drawing 2 of their last 21 games, they won 2-1 against Dalbeattie Star. A far cry from their heady days of 2007/8 in the Scottish Premiership...
When I came back from Australia in 2004, I spent the first three months living with my mother in Moffat - about 25 miles from Gretna - whilst looking around for a house before the rest of the family came over. One of the shopkeepers in Moffat had known my father, and that he had played for Gretna for a couple of seasons after the war - and, being a committee member of the Gretna supporters club, he invited me along to one of their matches. There was an old guy there who went to every match and was a walking encyclopedia on the subject of Gretna FC - he had such an amazing memory that he could remember my dad's playing days.
