I think Holt is looking rather thin these days. Noticed a few games a go he was thinner than C Martin! I regard Drury as a legend myself. Especially since he's been at the club for just over half my life.
After his run out and goal at Anfield, and looking at his current physic I wouldn't be surprised to see him included in a 4-4-2 or even a 4-4-1-1 to start with against Blackburn with the option of reverting back to the same line up for the last 5 games if it doesn't appear to be working. Would be interesting to see how it would work against what we might consider to be one of the poorer sides in the league so far.
I guess it would probably have to be Wes. As Sid Smooth said - decisions, decisions... No one deserves to be left out on performances but having seen what we saw on Saturday I can see PL trying it out to accommodate the player who could potentially be a regular goal scorer (and likely to be top scorer for us - again) and the best time to try it out has got to be at home against what we hope is weaker opponents?
As I said, no one deserves to lose their place BUT if re-introducing Holt makes a positive difference then it has to be the right thing to do. If it works then PL knows he has two good options with a near fully fit squad and would probably go back to the lone striker for away games.
having watched some of the blackburn game yesterday i have to heed a word of warning - blackburn are a pretty good side! its clear to me that they are short on confidence but they gave spurs a battering at times and really should have won the game. we shouldn't change our system for this game in my opinion - blackburn have some real pace going forward and by losing a man in midfield we would very quickly become overrun. they are not the whipping boys some may think they are by looking at their league position and results. this is going to be a very, very difficult match and we shouldn't change a formula that has worked for the majority of our games. if its not working during the match, THEN change it. for the time being, holt will have to remain patient
The idea of Holt's status as a Canaries legend is an interesting one. I noticed on the MotD highlights Jonathan Pierce called him a 'cult hero'. I'm 31 and Norwich have been a top flight team for roughly half of my life. So, in my mind it would make sense that the players who achieve that status would be those who have been significant at that level over a number of years. Holt, however, was a shining light when we needed one most, in the third tier of English football. Although Lambert made the real difference in getting us out of there no player did more than Holt on the pitch. Fans of the club will remember a fight to push forward with every player pulling in the same direction, and they will remember it with Holt leading the way. There were many discussions between me and my friends about whether he could cut it in the EPL and when the settled team that started getting results turned out to be one without Holt it was a little disappointing even if we were putting wins together. I think some of what would've made it more enjoyable to see Holt flourish is the unlikeliness. When was the last time anyone like Holt did well in the Premership? Given that deep down most of us knew his game would suffer and Holt's limited appearances so far, the chances are he won't play a major part in this or any future top-flight campaigns for Norwich. The difference he made in getting us there, though, will be enough for Norwich fans to remember and talk about him fondly for many years to come. And call him a legend.
Sorry not even a Canary myself but you have to put JEREMY GOSS for his volley vs Bayern Munich in your all-time legends list.. Norwich are still the ONLY english team to have won at the Olympiastadion!
I would say Kevin Davis is a case in point. I don't think Dean Ashton was all that different either. He won't play every game but the fact he can score and cause major problems at Stamford Bridge and Anfield suggest that he can mix it with the best of them.
in 30 years time, grant holt will still be revered by norwich fans i promise you. jonathan pierce is correct - he is a cult hero. he may not be the best footballer we've ever had, but holt represents all us fans who have played the game but never made it. he epitomises everything that is good about football, especially in an era where most footballers earn so much money and act like pillocks, it shows that the 'roy of the rovers' stuff can still happen today. he plays the game like a fan and for that reason, every single one of us can feel like we are a little piece of holt out there on the pitch, scoring at anfield in front of the kop. absolute legend
totally disagree about ashton! deano was an absolutely outstanding footballer who, had he not suffered his injury nightmares, would have gone on to win 50-odd caps for england. no comparison whatsoever can be made between ashton and holt, other than their goalscoring exploits
"every single one of us can feel like we are a little piece of holt out there on the pitch, scoring at anfield in front of the kop" Why do they call him "the horse" then Supers?
QPR fan in peace. I have read he comments about Grant Holt, and, whether you like him or not you always know wha you are going to get when he puts the shirt on. This may (or may not probably due at least a second) be his one and only season in the top flight however, he knows where the goal is and that goalies and defenders are not going to appreciate his style. Having watched QPR chelsea yesterday, i wonder whether chelsea would be a better team for going for hungry players rather than prima donnas who are prone to doing an Adel (throwing toys out if you pram) when thing don't go your way. I particularly enjoyed this comment "in 30 years time, grant holt will still be revered by norwich fans i promise you. jonathan pierce is correct - he is a cult hero. he may not be the best footballer we've ever had, but holt represents all us fans who have played the game but never made it. he epitomises everything that is good about football, especially in an era where most footballers earn so much money and act like pillocks, it shows that the 'roy of the rovers' stuff can still happen today. he plays the game like a fan and for that reason, every single one of us can feel like we are a little piece of holt out there on the pitch, scoring at anfield in front of the kop. " Great result for you guys against Liverpool, good luck for the season
cheers ninj. good result for the r's yesterday, even if i'm afraid, i was hoping for a chelsea win! don't want you finishing above us do we!!
Nah, I was happy with a win for the super 'oops - the weekend improved our chances of Champions League football next year with Chelsea and United dropping points
Davis is a good comparison, makes a B****y nuisance of himself.Ashton had he not been injured would have kept West Ham up.The player that reminds me most of Holt is Bob Latchford.Interestingly if you put Holt's Premiership time together it amounts to about 5 full games.A strike rate of 0.4goals per game puts him in pretty respectable company. He lacks a bit of pace but IMO makes up for it in enthusiasm, the effect he has on galvanising the team, encouraging the supporters and let's face it pretty deadly finishing as Anfield demonstrated.
