..........as reported in The Journal today

    ...............................................................................................................

A PROTESTER at an anti-capitalist camp in Newcastle was attacked by a member of a rival political group at the weekend.

The attack happened at 10.12pm on Saturday, when a 42-year-old man approached the camp at Newcastle’s Grey’s Monument and started shouting at the protesters.

A scuffle then broke out and a 39-year-old man was assaulted before police intervened, arresting the attacker.

Lee Newman, part of the Occupy Newcastle group, said: “Four people were walking past together, and one man left the rest of his group and approached our camp.

“As he walked towards us it was quite clear that he’d been drinking a lot and was pretty drunk. He was acting aggressively and started shouting at us.

“Then he started saying ‘where are you from?’ to people. When one person answered ‘Sunderland’ the man headbutted him.<laugh>

Stupid behavior, but I don't have a huge amount of time for these protesters - didn't St Paul's have to close in London 'cause sight seers couldn't get through to visit it?

How to spot a Sunderland resident against capitalism:

Look for lower case only banners.

What pissing me off most is the fact they're claiming they don't want to pay for the bankers mistakes (their main motive for the protest) - they're sitting on their arses, living in tents doing **** all every day...Tax payers are paying for the crisis, not these ****ing muppets!

I've got a few friends and acquaintances who work at the London Stock Exchange and whilst the added security is a hindrance to get in and out the building they are more annoyed that St Pauls has had to close. That's the only thing the protesters have actually managed to affect.

No more than those ****ing idiots deserve, camping in the city centre on a Saturday night. No matter what stupid hippy cause they've decided to campaign for instead of going out to work like the lot of us, there is no excuse for disrupting our city, they bring this kind of thing on themselves.

Good the police should take note to get rid of those occupy protesters. They should just lock them all up or deport them to 5under1and its not as if they are protesting for a good cause.

I wouldn't call the occupy movement a 'stupid hippy cause', but indeed it was stupid to do it on a Saturday night.

I'd call the 12 people doing it in Newcastle a stupid hippy cause.

I'm not condoning violence but he obviously was going in for a dig when he said he was from Sunderland.

You must be an idiot to say that to a pissed up Geordie.

Not condoning the attack, but they're a bunch of smelly trampy twats who are taking the piss now. Their political views are incoherent at best and they should go occupy somewhere less prominent if people are starting to get pissed off. Don't get me wrong - I hate the government and everything it stands for, but all this lot spend their time doing in those tents is cooking soup, smoking weed and playing **** music on their **** instruments. Laughable 'occupation'.
