A bit early to ask I know but I will anyway.

With Colback, Vaughn,Gardner and Mayler all looking good should we sell the captain?

Catts came to us with lots of hype but for me has never lived up to it. In flashes he has shown what he can do but those flashes are outweighed by the liability.

What could we get for him, 6-8 or 10 mil and what kind of striker would that get us when added to the cask Bruce will already have?

Left back, left wing, playmaker, centre back, all IMO areas we could spend on rather than have Catts.

Is it early, its nearly November so not long until a new window.

I believe that Catts is the most overrated player on our books, and if we could get a decent price for him I wouldn't be sad to see him sold...

Unfortunately I think Catts is always going to be a liability, his hearts in the right place, and his work rate is great but theres deffo some issues upstairs in his head. The red mist nearly always kicks in and its clear to see that hes a 'marked man' as far as refs in the prem are concerned. As you say, with the pool of central midfielders we have at the mo id be almost be tempted to move the lad on

Don't think we'd recoup what we paid, but he can go for me.

As long as we bring in someone left sided, a striker and a new centre-back.

TBH I cannot see us getting a good price for him, IIRC SB paid £6m? Tackles of the type Catts is good at, or as Hansen said "would have got you a new contract" are now outlawed and that negates his best attribute. So as he is slow, cannot pass and is unlikely to score (ever?) he is way down the midfielders pecking order at Sunderland, I think Elmo might be a better assets to the team head of Catts, and I do not really rate Elmo. Quite what SB thought by bringing him into the club and making him captain! Remember how he cost us points at the start of last season with his headless chicken tackles..

Couple of things for me. Firstly, there seem to be a hell of people putting a lot of faith in both Colback and Meyler. Hands up, I think Colback is an all round better footballer than Cattermole, I've been the ginger ninjas biggest fan since day one. But Meyler, as much as he is promising, has not played a competitive 90 minutes in God knows how long. Who knows whether he will be the same player? Just a little worried that we are getting carried away with some raw yet undeveloped talent.

Secondly, I just can't see Bruce selling Catts, no matter how many of us wish it was the case....

Good points. Colback is a canny lad but if isn't top class and Meyler may not be the same player after those injuries and is fond of the odd red card moment himself to be fair. Cattermole doesn't seem to have recovered from his injury problems and has never regained the promise he came with 2.5 years ago.

Our squad isn't that strong that we can ditch players so readily imo.

I would keep him. I really like Cattermole, and he is still young. I think he is only 23/24.

All he needs to do is work on his short passing, realisitically we can never expect him to spray 30 yard passers.

I thought he was brilliant when he first came to us, and also he was under 21's captain and could of potentially been an England capped player had he not been stupid and got all those red cards.
I truelly believe he is not 100% fit yet, hence why he hasn't played every game.

With regards to Colback, he seems good and will get better. HOWEVER he does go missing in games.

If we win against Villa and think Vaughan and Colback will be 1st choice CM for the next few months.

This. And don't forget our injury record of late. We need him as back up at least.

with Vaughan, Colback, Meyler, Larsson, Gardner who are all vying for a CM place, I think we should get rid of Catts.

Also, Oshea can also play as a defensive midfielder.

Catts is great at breaking up play, thats it. Once he has the ball he cant find the intelligent pass and his tackles leave him as a liability.

Good discussion above and fair points about the squad etc.

I think hes 5th choice cm and is a waste of a shirt once he gets booked in a game. IMO we cannot carry a player like that. My view, for what's it's worth, is sell if we get the type of money being talked about last summer £6-10m.

    sell for me

we have to many central midfielders that are pretty much the same as we need 1 if not 2 of them moving on from the bunch we have (Cattermole, Meyler, Vaughan, Colback and Gardner)

we have not one creative central midfielder in the form of a Modric, Kranjcar, Cabaye, Cahill and that is were we need to improve.

I like Vaughan and Colback especially but I think it should be one not both of them that starts and are played alongside someone who is going to add some creativity on the ball who will unlock defences with a quality pass or abit of skill.

Kranjcar would of been a brilliant signing in the summer if we had managed to get him to the club after all the talk

Our team in general not just midfield lacks pace, that certainly needs addressing in the next 2transfer windows along with the lack of creativity and the lack of a proper goalscorer
