That type of thing can work against you too. Too much waiting around, build up, anticipation can increase anxiety. I’d be pissed off with this if I lived in the town and it meant I was getting home a couple of hours later to my family on a Saturday night. We saw what happened to Hurst when he tried to inject some discipline - but different players and different owners who will certainly back the manager in the short term. Not really a marginal gain that one but a huge change for some of the players I reckon.
Well pandering to the players and not pushing them beyond their comfort zone has hardly been a raging success for us has it?Perhaps it’s time for a new radical approach!
Its a balance isnt it? We are seeing beginnings of a new team spirit, togetherness which is fostered before a game and in post match wind down & analysis. But obviously players need to get back to families by early evening on a Saturday. Midweek is different and more time to bond away from home, can be a productive time. Lets not forget they are professionals!
Absolutely it’s a balance. I’m not talking about right or wrong. I’m talking about how players react to things. Bobby, Alex Ferguson, Pep, Klopp. These are masters of finding that balance and getting the most from players. McKenna himself will admit he’s got a lot to learn. I hope he doesn’t overdo the rigour and the discipline at the expense of having some warmth and fun with the players. In the short term I’m sure he’ll get a reaction but that won’t necessarily be sustained without the right balance.
