You're in South Carolina right ?

The one I saw in Mexico had a big yellow abdomen with white spots, black and orange legs. It was ****in big, it was years ago now when I was in my mid 20's but I remember it being at least about 5-6 inches leg span. It had made a massive web in the corner between one of the joists and the outside of the tree house. I wanted it gone, but the local folk I was staying with were saying it was harmless and it would keep my room free of biting insects so I just left it alone.

Even if I'd wanted to move it I wouldn't have had the chutzpah to go anywhere near it lol

Yeah, we have something called a golden orb here but don't think I've ever seen one. But I think different species with same name, I don't think we get anything that big. We don't get any truly crazy spiders.

We do get a lot of black widows that can be quite bad if they bite you, but they're small (look a little like black blueberries with legs)... Never actually known anyone who was bit by them despite them being very common.

Biggest spider I ever saw was in Key West, I was crossing the road and saw this big fooker head under the kerbing of the gutter. No idea what it was, but wouldn't want to meet it in an enclosed space. To think I noticed it as I was crossing the road, gives you some idea of its size.

So these are Joro spiders... Native to East Asia:

White line is 3cm... In just a few years after being introduced in Georgia they've already become one of the most common spiders there (because birds and other animals haven't learnt to eat them yet). My In laws in Georgia are talking about seeing them everywhere.

They're here in SC now too... So I'm expecting to be overrun with them in the next few years... Haven't seen one yet, but they look quite pretty as far as spiders go. Apparently tend to build webs higher than you're likely to walk into them, so I welcome them, anything that will eat flies and mosquitos is a friend in my book.

We get quite a lot of False widow spiders down here. I get loads of them in my house, under bookshelves, behind wardrobes, in the shed. They like dark dry spaces. Apparently they can give quite a nasty bite, akin to a bee sting. They've got that big black abdomen like a Black Widow, but without the red markings.

I've seen people feeding geckos before, I assume to encourage their population in keeping mosquitos down.

They are, love them, all I use to hear of a night was the 'plop' as they fell to the ground, had them try to get in my suitcase before, completely harmless creatures.
