How old is she? the older the are, the easier as you will inevitably find they have a load of "little errands" to do around the house that mean you can escape to the garage and/or the shed to bang around - or even get out to the shops to pick up a part. Can you not "notice" a dripping tap or a sticking door or a flickering light that you can offer to fix? Wrong time of year for mowing the lawn but you get the idea. Or walk the dog? Retune the telly (that's perennial). A lot easier than listening to your MIL for 8 hours, plus you get lots of brownie points from both the mum and the daughter for being such a nice helpful son-in-law.
Actually kept occupied in the summer and late autumn so it was almost ok but since then I’ve not been creative enough . I like your thinking, I need to mooch around and find small useful jobs within my capability. But they’ve got to be jobs that she doesn’t have ‘ approve’ or even understand , I once had a mother in law who could spot the only small tear in the wallpapering in a 30’ through lounge - from 20’ away Needless to say her daughter only stayed for 28 years !!!

Imagine telling everybody you're leaving, mincing off and then coming back and typing that. You can't even **** off properly. I'd tell you myself, but you'd probably end up ringing for a takeaway or writing a letter. ****'s sake. The idea of ****ing off is to not **** back again a few days later. Away witcha.
