They live in a country that values freedom and liberty, and which, unlike Britain, has a constitution worth more than the paper it's written on (not least because it's actually written down in the first place). The American government might be keen on tyrannical impositions, and the police incompetent at times, but both clearly fear the violent passion with which the citizens of the US will defend their rights when pushed. Mass non compliance. Took my daughter to get her eyes tested today, used public transport looked around a few shops bought her a Happy meal and the only person that asked about masks was the opticians receptionist , I told her I don't use them and she didn't protest.
