It could be a good thing, and they've been saying for a while that a milder variant may appear, but the increased transmissibility might still lead to a significant number of deaths amongst the vulnerable, despite it causing only milder disease in otherwise healthy people. If more people get this variant, more susceptible people will get, and therefore more people could die.

Yes, exactly, because they don't know how the variant will behave in the population yet. That's why they've modelled it and come up with several different scenarios of what could happen. Its no good doing nothing and, after a large number of deaths, saying "oh yeah, we thought that could happen".

My worry is that if it's purposely allowed to spread we might find that, yes it won't kill as many, but it may swamp the hospitals.

Agree, but they could do that without the pointless scaremongering that happens when you release these numbers to the likes of BBC and The Mail

Yeah, I agree that sensationalist headlines just cause panic. Though I suppose there's something to be said for telling people the worst case and them being cautious and so avoiding that worst case.

Why's that then? The more cautious people are, the less likely it is to cause us problems.

People have had enough of the doom and gloom. The prospect of further lockdowns will affect the mental health of many. Let's deal with it if and when it happens. Until then, leave people be

Yeah, but lockdowns are different to being cautious. If a press source gives a worst case scenario and it leads to people following the current rules more rigidly, which basically amount to wearing a mask, that's a good thing.

Agreed but people won't. There is nothing to be gained by scaring people as it will actually lead to more resentment and less compliance

We have plan B in place as a precautionary measure. Whilst I think it is overly cautious, it's fine for now. There's no need to even discuss more changes

True, and I understand they have a lower vaccine uptake — but it would be a start

I think you're probably right that it will lead to more resentment. I've got to say that I think that's short sighted, on the part of the general public, though. No one wants restrictions but precautions stop problems happening.

It's a fine line between precautions and restrictions. The current ill feeling towards the Govt won't help either.
I'm all for a bit of caution just in case, but I find the careless reporting and almost sensationalism of these headlines extremely irresponsible

Seriously, he reminds me of this bloke which is equally funny and tragic at the same time.

What's tragic is that the black fella looks and sounds more professional <doh>

People try to take Boris seriously but really know he's just a bluffer in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Boris" Johnson is a persona, a character played by Alexander Johnson. Time for the curtain to fall on his performance. Screenshot_20211212-090306.png
