Football manager Joey Barton has been found not guilty of attacking a rival after a match.

Mr Barton, 39, had denied pushing over the then Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel in the tunnel at the Oakwell stadium after a match in April 2019.

Mr Stendel suffered facial injuries, damage to a tooth and bruising.

The Bristol Rovers boss was cleared of one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

As he left court, Mr Barton said: "I think the verdict speaks for itself."

Asked how he felt, he replied: "Better than I did before."

During the week-long trial Mr Stendel said he was walking down the tunnel in the corner of Barnsley's Oakwell Stadium after his side's 4-2 victory against Fleetwood Town.

He said he had been knocked over by a push from behind, causing him to hit his face on the metal structure.

Video footage shown during the trial showed Mr Stendel entering the tunnel followed by Mr Barton shortly afterwards.

In his evidence, Mr Barton denied being hostile or aggressive towards his opposite number and stated he did not recall coming into contact with anyone in the tunnel.

He admitted using "industrial language" during a post-match handshake with Mr Stendel, but denied there were tensions between them during the match.

Nathan Kirby, Barnsley performance analyst intern, had given evidence that he saw Mr Barton run past him and "shoulder-barge" Mr Stendel.

However, Mr Barton's barrister Simon Csoka QC said in his closing speech that even if it had been an accident it was quite possible for Mr Barton to have been unaware of what happened.

I thought he had nutted him?

If this has all been based on whether he pushed somebody over or not, there does seem a lack of evidence and you can see why he's had the not guilty. I'm surprised it actually made it to trial.

He's up for assaulting his wife, next Thursday. I expect the same outcome or even chucked out on the day of the trial after reading this...

Around mid-day on Sunday, Joey Barton’s wife Georgia also had her say, leaving many fans baffled. She wrote: “Whilst I wouldn’t normally comment on private matters, before the rumour mill goes into overdrive I’d like to make it clear there is absolutely no accusation by myself or anyone else that Joe has been violent or physical towards me. We consider this a private matter and will be making no further comment.”

Why is this even going to court? If she is saying there was no assault then who is? Your right he is going to get off again. No case to answer.

Pressure on the Police to be seen doing something about domestic violence.
Sure I read somewhere that they the Police are empowered these days to persue cases like this without the need of a complaint from 'the injured party'.
Back in my policing days this would never have gone to court.

Sounds like there's been a bit of an argument/shoving match, someone has called the cops (neighbour, friend, child?) who turn up in huge numbers (because that's what they do) and arrest Barton, then the CPS have decided that given his profile and previous they would nail him for it. The wife on the other hand has decided its nothing to get too worked up over. But the latest fad is the law sticking its nose into places they have no business especially when the "victim" isn't wanting to press charges or give evidence against the perpetrator as is often the case where there is no material damage other than to peoples feelings. Sometimes, just sometimes the result of getting the law involved is far worse than the initial "crime" and will end in divorce, upheaval and ongoing upset when a simple apology and working through of things is all thats needed - oh and 18 months of counselling and therapy.

    Bartons a twunt though.

Cumbrian is probably the best guy for this. I'd imagine they'll be looking at an affray and letting it run until the court date hoping she has a change of mind or they have a falling out. If the prosecution on the day realise she'll (the victim) be called in by the defence and is going to say he never hit her, at that point it'll probably be chucked. Unless there's CCTV which captured it. I'm not sure, Gil. I know back in my day this sort of thing would never have made it to court.

They can prosecute domestic violence without a complaint from the victim as quite often they don't get one. However, the results of no intervention can be tragic.

I'd suggest though that the only way this last a full trial is if the police are witnesses or have body cam footage.
