I have health problems as well which make me highly vulnerable. Had to shield for most of last year. I take extra care when out. Have had words from the wife about remarks I have passed to maskless people or ones reaching over you to get something off a shelf because they can't be bothered to wait a few seconds.
What is the argument here? Missed treatments are a bad thing. I don't think anyone disagrees with that.
We faced Covid cancer treatment rationing in April 2020. The stark and blunt conversation was along these lines. The surgeon: My job is to cut people open, remove what needs removing and close people up, its what I do and I am very good at it. My decision on who I operate on at the moment is compromised by my lack of theatres and staff. I have a simple choice. I have to choose who I believe has the greater chance of having a reasonable quality of life after surgery. In your case you will never be cured and so the operation is simply a means to extend your life beyond the next few months, into the next few years. I have 3 slots available and 3 patients for every slot, you have proved to me by your determination to prepare for surgery by improving on the time you took to climb 8 flights of stairs, that you will benefit more than some of the others and I will have you in next week. My wife struggled to climb 8 flights of stairs when she first went to see him. He is not the only one to do the stairs test. He said to go home and get fitter as if my wife was still at the same level, the operation could kill her. We came home and three or four times a day we climbed our stairs. My wife started at having to stop at 8 times and ended up being able to do 15. We were faced with the true picture of the NHS in crisis. Now you ****ers who want to ignore covid and live your "normal" lives, or do not want to get vaccinated. Stop and think about just how you will feel sat in the chair listening to that sort of conversation. And by the way, I am not aiming this post at any particular poster, far from it. I have a great deal of respect for many of the views posted on here. But, even this morning, sat in a chair, in a room, with my wife, as a cancer Doctor, decides if treatment will go ahead, coming back to point scoring on a football forum, simply makes me weep.
You're a right larf, intcha?. You want to share the article? Was it the one in the Daily Mail? The one that had some evidence she was once a communist, but no evidence she still was. In any case, they gave no evidence that her political views influenced her scientific views, and no evidence (nor did they allege) that she 'sees lockdowns as a way of destroying the economy'. So simple question. What's your evidence that she 'sees lockdowns as a way of destroying the economy'. Write on only one side of the paper, double space the lines, try not to use crayon.
The point (not argument!) is more people will die as a consequence of the lock downs (suicide / non NHS treatment etc) than will die from Covid. Many of us stated this at the time. There are bigger issues affecting society than Covid, such as obsiety, dementia, heart disease, cancer etc but we seem to forgotten those & only Covid deaths count.
More people? Based on what figures? Apart from anything else, ignoring the state the NHS was in and letting it get worse would've further increased the number of people having delays getting treatment for other stuff. Clearly there's been a significant collateral cost to covid and the response to it. I think we always knew there would be unfortunately. The way to avoid or mitigate it would be to have a health service with greater capacity so as to be prepared for the burden of a pandemic, rather than neglecting it as it is. If your point is that the NHS should be better equipped then I wholeheartedly agree.
How many people would have died from Covid if there been no lockdowns? And how many people would have died if our hospitals were full of greater numbers of covid patients, as a result of there being no lockdowns?
Your evidence she is no longer a member of the Communist Party is...? "Write on only one side of the paper, double space the lines, try not to use crayon." Is that so you can understand it? Joined up writing in thin letters a bit too difficult?
There's absolutely no evidence that there'll be more deaths from missed diagnosis and suicide than there was from COVID. The suicide rate hasn't gone up at all, in fact it dropped in 2020 and the numbers for the first half of 2021 are the same as the first half of 2019. There will obviously be some consequences from missed/delayed diagnosis for cancer etc, but most who are ill are still being seen and treated and we're unlikely to see undiagnosed cancer patients dying at the rate of 1,000 a week.
The first global lockdowns prevented 530million infections world wide up to June 2020. it is estimated that throughout Europe 3m lives were saved by the introduction of lockdowns again up to June 2020. The estimates for the UK were 500,000 lives would be lost. But as some have pointed out the cost is high.
You had better tell her to update her Wikipedia page. "Michie was married from 1981 to 1997 to the trade union official Andrew Murray and has three children.[20] She married psychologist Robert West,[21] Emeritus Professor at University College London,[22] in 2009. Michie is a member of the Communist Party of Britain[23][21] and was also member of its predecessor the Communist Party of Great Britain.[24] In March 2018, she spoke at a public meeting saying that communists should be "working full tilt" for the election of Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister.[25][26] She made a £14,000 donation to Labour under Corbyn's leadership.[27][28]"
Well, the old folk didn't. Their treatment in homes was pretty poor. But generally their people follow guidelines and observe them better than ours do.
She probably is, I was just making the point that the Daily Mail provided no evidence she was. As the Communist Party isn't a banned organisation (yet), it's immaterial unless anyone has any evidence that her political views influenced her scientific views, the Mail didn't, if you do then fire away. In any case, the most serious accusation was that she 'sees lockdowns as a way of destroying the economy'. Did you make that up?
They had no formal lockdown, but they didn't just carry on as normal, many of the things we did (working form home, not travelling, avoiding social contact) they also did.
