Our justice system is broken. Chucking a couple of years on a few sentences won't fix it. It's been dismantled from the streets to the courts and it's only going to get worse.
Makes for a good headline though which is the main thing. Tough on crime and all that. Pensioners feel re-assured skimming through their copy of The Express.
Of course I support locking people up if they commit crimes, I just don't support the push to make sentences ever longer as it doesn't work. If 15 years isn't a deterrent for a crime then 30 years won't be either. The whole point of the justice system is lessen crime. The more money you spend on prisons keeping people locked up, the less money you have to spend on police officers to help keep crime down. Not that I'm a fan of speed cameras... But when you see a speed camera, do you not slow down? Its because you know you will be caught (the true deterrent). You're probably less likely to slow down if you see "road work, fines doubled" signs. Human nature, it's not the severity of the punishment that deters us, it's the chance you can get away with the crime or not without being punished.
Hmmm making criminals fear they're more likely to get caught or longer prison sentences? Just a thought but a novel idea might be to do both. We could try that. But that would mean undoing a decade's worth of cuts to the police, community services, judiciary and legal court system, and prison services. As a wise man once said, you can't get juice out of an orange you haven't got. I think it was Gandhi or Linekar. Just know it was someone who never got booked.
so you reckon you would keep speeding if they automatically disqualified you or if they pounded your car?
You know this happens to people and they still do it, right? Watch any of those police reality shows and they get tons of them. They just start buying really cheap cars and carry on as normal.
Yes. If I thought there was little chance of being caught. In an extreme example: If there were only one parking attendant in Greater London, it wouldnt matter if a parking ticket was £20, £2000, or they took your car and crushed it (after giving it a good pounding and some bukake action)... People would park illegally because they would think they weren't going to get caught.
yup, but potato was talking about the normal person. Most people if the severity is big enough will stop with that as a deterrent. If you knew they were going to up the punishment, would you carry on speeding because i know i wouldn't. That is the point really. You're always going to get people who murder and gangs who carry knives. It's how to bring that number down as you will never get that to zero. In any case the car speeding analogy was just a bad one imo as if people knew they would go to prison for speeding, 80% of the normal population would automatically not speed (on purpose anyway)
So in this example, it's because there is a lack of parking attendents (police in real life for knife crime). Likewise, if i knew that the police were just going to ask me very nicely not to speed each time i sped, i don't think i'm going to stop speeding. It doesn't matter if theres a policeman on every corner, that won't stop myself speeding Likewise, if a gangster is going to carry around a knife and start stabbing people, told to stop and given a suspended community sentence, i'm not sure he's going to stop.
You bring it down by working out why it happens in the first place and addressing the cause. Add proper policing, rehabilitation, a functional court system and you'd be getting somewhere. You'll still have fruitcakes doing stupid ****, of course, as that's never going to change. Not putting them in charge of the criminal justice system might help, though.
Neo-Nazi found guilty of being a member of his own group: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-59475899 Shocker, eh? I wonder if he'll get an extended sentence?
Looks like such a normal fella too. Wearing Lonsdale to court is always going to give you the best chance.
have him take a test do you hate black people did the holocaust exist do you like hitler if he answers these right, let him walk as theres no point spending a 100k housing him in prison as he's rehabbed
