    A gravestone to Dambuster’s leader Wing Commander Guy Gibson was removed by the RAF after the decision was taken at a high level (Picture: File images)
    The RAF hired a memorial firm to replace the grave of a dog belonging to one of the Dambusters after senior leaders decided it contained an ‘unacceptable racial slur’.

    The memorial for pilot Guy Gibson’s pet was removed after a ‘corporate’ decision found the word was ‘completely at odds’ with modern times.

    An online petition calling for the reinstatement of the gravestone – which featured the N-word for the name of the Wing Commander’s black Labrador retriever – has attracted 27,800 signatures.


    However Sarah Hobday, whose uncle Sydney took part in the raids, failed in her attempt to force a rethink on the grounds that the original wording should remain part of history.

    The RAF has disclosed that it paid Draper Memorials in Lincoln £675 to remove the headstone and replace it with another engraved with non-offensive wording.
