Refugees who have fled a variety of conflict zones including Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Eritrea and France

they believed the fact the UK was no longer part of the EU made it more appealing to risk the dangerous crossings because they could no longer be sent back to other European countries under EU legislation.

So basically they will risk both their own and their children's lives to flee the EU and France?
And people wonder why we left the EU <doh>

You do realise this was a comedy show and not meant to be taken as a social comment?

You don't get it do you Diego? It don't matter why they're doing what they're doing, it only matters what they believe. And Brexit has motivated more to cross the channel on that belief.

And people wonder why we left the EU indeed! <ok>

You don't get it do you Trebs, you have to ask why they believe that and why they fear staying in the EU so much they will risk their children's lives.

No I don't <laugh> I don't have to ask that all. The facts are, leaving the EU means more are motivated to cross the channel.

3 x the amount so far compared to last year.

Dress it up all you want, them's the facts.

But "take back control of our borders" or something lol

    Say's a lot really.

made it more appealing to risk the dangerous crossings because they could no longer be sent back to other European countries under EU legislation.

I'm not really sure it's a reflection on the EU if the refugees themselves want to come here which is clearly the case. IF the likes of France were actively booting them out and locking the door behind them, it would mean a lot.

BTW on a side note, the problem we have is two very right wing politicians from the UK and France (namely Priti Patel and Gerald Darmanin) trying to cooperate on a matter they're diametrically opposed to. Good luck with that. Probably the worst combination you can get.

They say they come here because they can't be sent back to the EU.
Why would they flee a war zone into a safe, nice country like Germany or France to then risk further danger by crossing an expanse of sea in a rubber dingy or (as has happened a lot) a kayak?

France are not kicking them out, agreed. What they are doing is facilitating their departure and definitely locking the door behind them.

There are many reasons why e.g. language, family, the presence of their communities... here's the best bit... because they want to.

Facilitating? Really? I can't find any evidence of that.

Btw did we know they would lock the door before we voted to leave? <whistle>

You not seen the films of armed French police stood by watching rubber dinghey's fill up before taking sail?, Watching small children and baby's being loaded into those things would have had any normal person realising the danger they faced, these people just couldn't give a ****.

just to be clear, i have absolutely no problem taking in refugees from anywhere in the world and would be disgusted if we didn't.
Most of the people coming here from France are not or at least no longer fleeing war, they are not destitute (pay up to £5,000 per person to buy a crossing, my family would have to make do with the EU because i couldn't afford that).

I haven't no, but I have seen our police stood by watching Insulate Britain protestors gluing themselves to the motorway, even asking if they'd like some refreshments. Not sure I'd equate that to the UK government facilitating the protestors to bring the M25 to a halt.

In World War 2, many people fled Nazi Germany through many safe countries, including us to get to places like the U.S. and South America. Many paid large sums of money to do so. Nobody ever begrudged them. It happens mate.

FWIW I think we'd be far better off if the likes of Priti Patel stopped grandstanding to the Telegraph and Mail readers with braindead ridiculous ideas that play to their xenophobia and instead actually processed the asylum applications for those that are here a lot quicker. Then we'd know who was or wasn't a refugee and we could get the ones who aren't out and deter those who are coming in under false pretences.

There's a reason for that, America was out of the war zone, the countries they fled through weren't.

In the present situation the EU is not in the war zone people are fleeing from.

Pretty sure the U.S. was in WW2 bro. Pretty sure Switzerland wasn't as well.

Are you honestly suggesting the same motivation to move to the U.S. wasn't there for those refugees as there are for those moving to he UK today? Namely family, community and the means and money to get there. I doubt many were looking into it any more deeply than that back in WW2.

And btw plenty did settle in the UK as well in WW2, just like plenty settle in France, Germany, Spain etc now. Your argument doesn't stack up.

Yep, got bombed the **** out of night after night <doh>

America as a country was about as dangerous in WW2 as it was during the Vietnam war, Europe was slightly different.

But your whole point falls flat because not everyone fled to the U.S. <doh> They settled in the U.K. as well which you accept was a war zone.

The point is, that people fled - some chose to settle in the first country they came to that was free of Nazi rule, others went further like the U.S. They all CHOSE to do what they thought was in their best interests and where they wanted to build their future. Nobody questioned them on it. And the fact of the matter is refugees are doing the same now. Settling in the first country they come to like Greece, Italy, Spain or travelling further afield to France, Germany and the UK. But because they look different, they're thought of with disdain and cynicism.

When you have to twist and turn to justify your POV against why refugees were technically doing the same thing 80 years ago to what they're doing today, then you have to take a step back and think again tbh.

He probably doesn’t realise that actually. I am still trying to work out whether he doesn't understand the issues he posts about or whether he is deliberately wumming.

What offence is being committed though that would enable the police to actually do something? Or are you one of those 'freedom lovers' who are happy to see others subject to unlawful police action?
