I think you missed my key point. Rather than lock down the whole country we could have targeted the most vulnerable. If you're in a vulnerable group it would make perfect sense to take extreme precautions when meeting anyone, just in case they are asymptomatic, but my example referred to a 20 something couple with no vulnerable friends or relations. Why do they need to lock down for a virus which is absolutely no threat to them. As I said, if you're vulnerable you should be extremely careful around everyone.
You've brought up excess deaths a couple of times. It's a buzzword when the death figures don't hit what they predicted

    https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/tran...mofinformationfoi/deathsintheukfrom1990to2020

It was a bad year in 2020 because of the Coronavirus but not as bad as every year before 2009 per 100k of the population once adjusted for age.

You also mentioned 2nd waves, this is another buzz word. Do you remember them predicting 100k cases per day? What happened to that?
The lockdowns had no effect on the spread, it just ruined our economy, caused untold harm to people needing treatment for other ailments and meant that everything went up in price.
Try to buy a car now!

I have studied you comments with great interest and have to agree instead of putting the whole country on furlough at £2500 a month it would have made more sense to pay the likes of myself £2500 per month to look after myself
The country would have saved a fortune and I could have bought a villa in Spain win win

I was simply comparing the Nordic countries, as they have a similar lifestyle. Belgium certainly has a higher death rate but then again some more densely populated countries, such as Japan, have managed to achieve a much lower death rate. That was why I suggested the effectiveness of the different strategies should be reviewed and assessed. I suppose I'm biased towards lockdowns as for me personally they appear to have worked. Our total lockdown period was less than a month and even then I have space on my property to not have to stay in. You are right the total effects of the strategies need to be assessed, impacts on other health conditions, mental health damage, schooling, economy, etc etc

For information Stockholm doesn't appear to be that densely populated compared to Helsinki, Oslo or particularly Copenhagen.

The statistics have been looked at in quite a binary way, low infections good high infections bad, but there are far more complex issues that have and are still occurring, delayed medicals, postponed operations, business failures, personal finances, job security etc. As I have a couple of kids I worry about the impact this talk of death, doom and disease is having on them.

A lot of stressing out on here today about illegal immigrants crossing the English Channel in record numbers.

Just a thought but what exactly were the hopes and expectations post brexit ? Did we really think the French would put an end to migrant channel crossings when they'd shown zero appetite to do so when we were members of the EU ?

Now instead of just flapping your fannies could at least one of you come up with a workable solution.
