I wasn't suggesting that he'd become chairman. Supposedly, Paratici's now in charge of football matters... It's to be hoped that his authority extends to stopping 'someone' from buying players that coaches (particularly this one) don't want.
You'd think that just wouldn't happen anyway. Why buy a player your manager won't use? That did screw us with Pochettino though, as he didn't want anyone we could get.
He bought Bergwijn, Bale and Rodon during Mourinho's reign and he didn't want them either...and hardly played them. We've bought a dog. Levy can stop barking, now.
I think it's fair to say that Mourinho didn't fancy Rodon, but I'm not convinced on the other two. Bergwijn played every game in the season he joined us, barring Leipzig away due to injury. Then he was in and out for the next campaign, but that was often due to not being available. Bale came in injured and took a while to get fit, then didn't have the workrate to play the system. Worked well against weak opposition, but bombed in some big games, like against the filth. They still made 35 and 34 appearances respectively.
Mourinho said Bergwijn wasn't his choice and he definitely wanted a striker, not another winger... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...tes-Spurs-chiefs-signing-Steven-Bergwijn.html Once he was there, Mourinho got behind him (as much as he does for any player when things are going wrong). There were rumours at the time that Mourinho didn't want Bale, later given further weight by reports like this, which presumably came from Mourinho's camp at the time of his sacking... https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/jo...-re-signing-of-gareth-bale-last-summer-report The 'late in the window' signings who don't make a significant impact - think Lucas or Aurier or Sissoko - are Levy purchases. ...
They're all Levy purchases! Not my first option ≠ did not want. His first choice was probably Ronaldo, Messi or Lewandowski. As for the Mourinho/Bale story, the author of the article wouldn't even put his name to it. The Telegraph story is by Matt Law, who is Chelsea filth and ****ing hates us. I thought everyone on here was happy with us re-signing Bale, anyway? Was that a bad choice?
I ****ing hated the bloke, but even I don't think that's likely. Not everyone....and I didn't want him the previous summer, either.
Ok, let's assume that he wanted a striker, as the story says. Who was realistic and where was he going to use him?
**** knows...but I'm pretty sure it sure it wasn't Messi or Ronaldo or Lewndowski...and Mourinho said it wasn't Bergwijn. Actually, I've looked it up and they were...Olivier Giroud, Krzysztof Piatek and Willian Jose. A little less aspirational...and definitely a lot less good.
When Jose did get a second striker he barely played, so made himself look a bit of a fool when had that public plea for a striker the window we signed Jose. Then he managed to balls up Bale’s return in large parts. How is it even possible to do that when looking at the squad we had/ have? Whether you wanted him or not he was miles above any option we had. Even Mason realised that.
Chelsea wouldn't sell us Giroud. They blocked it. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/olivier-giroud-arsenal-tottenham-transfer-25213019 Piatek's missus wanted to move closer to home: https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/piatek-tottenham-hertha-berlin-transfer-17692899 He's also been pretty ****, but that's neither here nor there. Willian Jose was just about the transfer fee, apparently. Flopped at Wolves, though.
I never said they were any good...although given our recent record on transfers, they might not look too out of place.
Much like Fraudiola and Norbert whined about wanting to keep five subs yet when they had the option available they only ever used a maximum of three, the ubermensch moaning about wanting players in spite having players he wasn't using got grating very quickly - and not a single pundit called him out for it The fact that Vini didn't even get a run of starts for Kane's annual ankle injuries makes his posturing over a new striker an absolute joke, especially considering that Thicc Vin got a run of starts when he was with us in both body and spirit when Kane went down early that season
I wasn’t impressed with him last season. He had a couple of good moments but not anything meriting his ridiculous salary. Some might say Jose didn’t manage him well but I’ll say in response to look at how Kane and Son managed last season. Bale is a vanity project. He’s not what Spurs need.
Jose's counter attacking system would have been perfect for Bale of circa 2010-12, but it was a complete waste in 2020. He was never going to do the defensive work and didn't have the legs to sprint the length of the pitch multiple times in one match. I don't necessarily see him as a starter but if (when) it's the 78th minute of a game and we're struggling to score, I'd sure as hell rather see him warming up to come on than the likes of Lo Celso, Dele or Bergwijn. Class is permanent and in those moments you speak of, Bale did more than Lucas, Bergwijn, Lo Celso, Dele and Clarke managed combined all season.
