I have really enjoyed the recent threads about the support of both clubs and it made me think about my own situation and how many people are in the same boat. So as the name goes my wife is a mag and when we lived in the NE we both had respective season tickets. Her family are black and white and I had many a ribbing in good humour when I was welcomed as the boyfriend. What was funny however was that my Brother in Laws son went on to ignore his dads allegiance and started coming with me to Sunderland. He is now a season ticket holder much to his own dads disgust. So whilst they talk about it regularly on merseyside how many mixed families do we have in the NE
Me, my girlfriend and all of her family are Newcastle fans. So are my football supporting cousins I think. In my house my mam and sister both support Sunderland (not proper fans though) and my stepdad supports Everton for some odd reason lol
All my family up north are sunderland that i know of.. not met them all yet though.. i went against the grain
Dads side all Sacriston mags mams side all Gilesgate safc . Thank god mothers dad dragged me off to roker in 65 or else would have missed last 46 years of suffering .
My family are a mixture, the only really big football supporters are me and my brother though, he is Newcastle, I am Sunderland. There is plenty of banter between us but no hatred. To be honest the last few derbies we have been in the north East, I have been to the match and he has gone to the pub because he could not get a ticket, its much worse when were both at home watching it on the TV. We have joked many times that they should put us both on Fan Zone on derby day. It would certainly make for unique TV.
got a cousin born and bred in Leicester who's son is toon daft much to my cousins dismay and he blames me when all i did was take him to a stadium tour years ago
My kid brother and one of my sisters are Mackems. My other brother and one of my sons are Man Utd. One of my other sisters, my mother and my 3 other sons are Mags. Is that clear, or have you got a headache now? That is why I don't go in for all of the "hate the mags" bollocks. We're both NE clubs and both clubs and fans are a credit to our region.
Ouch! My brother is expecting his first child (and the first in our family so far) and boy/girl/somewhere I can't wait to get it little Toon strips and take it to its first game! My immediate family isn't THAT football orientated, I was the only one who played it to any recognizable level, and the only one who would attend games more than once a season (though at the minute, getting over from Belfast is proving to be a bit of an arse on). So although they're all Newcastle fans, they aren't too fanatical. My Irish cousins are mostly Manure fans and the other side (in Norfolk) prefer cricket... My kids are being force fed Newcastle, whether they like it or not!
agree with the last line even though my family are all mags but as i said on the other board my grandad used to go to both despite when you asked him he's say he was a mag. I remember once when i questioned him about it and why he went to watch the enemy he turned round and said "we're from here the both of us and no one else in the country gives a stuff so we've got to" sort of makes sense.
All my kids have photos as babies in red and white stripes which I have in frames to remind them. They have also been bought Newcastle shirts. No doubt they will end up supporting Arsenal or Chelsea.
Yeh I totally agree with this, same with my Grandad really. Huge Newcastle fan, has tons of books and videos and memorabilia but through his youth he'd go to watch Sunderland every so often to cheer on the other local team with his mates who supported them. I still watch Sunderland matches on TV (well, streams) now, my mates who I talk about football to are all from around the north east and I enjoy watching their team and see how theyre doing, even though I do also enjoy seeing us destroy them on derby day!
My great-grandfather was a Newcastle fan, and his wife pretended to be a Sunderland fan whilst he was alive, just to piss him off. However, when he died, she went back to Newcastle, as was her daughter until she married my grandfather, who is a massive Sunderland fan. My mum is a Sunderland fan, and my dad (who is Italian) has also been converted to red and white.
Dad's side of the family - born and bred in Byker, lived in the old slum housing (then moved to Kenton) and had been going to games at St James' pretty much since it was established. Mum's side are from Consett - half are mags and the other half are the dual supporters as discussed on the other thread. My parents moved to Worcester before I was born and the absence of any sort of decent local team, no sense of allegiance to the teams in Birmingham (an hour away) and "entertainers'" success coinciding with my first realisation of the world of football (I was born in 89) meant the stage was set for me to start a tumultuous 17 years of supporting Newcastle.
