He is officially a co-founder after he put in $6.5m of the $7.5m required to set the business up, less than six months after the company was registered.

Somewhere like Walmart would be a more appropriate comparison. There's a stark difference between the two.

I know my opinions can come across as being heartfelt, but there's room for a little more empathy in the world, don't you think?

To try and make that fit the topic of this thread, I'd have to point out that in your replies, you are the one showing limited empathy and you lack a robust argument against Musk.

It's better to stick to a factual position on the topic, rather than trying to make it personal.

Do philanthropists give more relatively speaking today than 150 years ago? On the surface it looks like in the old days it was the captains of industry that donated to the poor, where as today it's the ordinary folk who donate to charities.

    Interesting subject.

It is an interesting subject. Some of the billionaires mentioned on this thread have donated amounts more than the wealth of some Countries, although they arguable received even more in return as a consequence.

Some of the wealthy in days of old, didn't donate anything, including some locals that were among the wealthiest in the world. Others donated, but perhaps for reasons that suited their own ends, and with money they had acquired by similar methods to those currently being criticised, despite poverty and the wealth gap being far more pronounced back then.

Buffet must head the table, having committed to giving away 99% (£100b) of his net worth, followed by Bill Gates who’s donated $50b to his foundation, even Bezos has just given away $10b.

A little story about billionaires, well almost a billionaire lol. My grandson is always banging on about bit coin, he found a coin think it’s name was santa or something put £100 on it. He woke up at his mates house yesterday and looked at how it was doing. It had gone up to 55 billion, he woke up his hungover mates who all wanted a piece. He even rang up a private jet company to see how much a flight to Las Vegas would be, ten grand apparently. A few hours later the people running the coin put out a statement saying there had been a glitch in the system and apologised for the confusion. It was either the truth or a brilliant marketing ploy because at one point it was the most talked about coin on the market. He has a screenshot of his account… it’s the hope that kills you !!!!! Harrison rang me and said “ grandad for a short time I was one of the richest men in the world “ er no you wasn’t my reply. I’ve written a poem called “ the billionaire that wasn’t “ and using the screenshot. It’s never dull in Ull, well at least in our house it isn’t lol…

It sounds like he will have to sell off some stock soon to raise funds to pay off some loans (?) which are due to be paid shortly no matter what the out come.

The deal for Hertz to buy 100,000 Tesla cars which caused the share price to rise quite a bit may not be all it was cracked up to be either. Not the first time his comments have influenced the share price.

    https://www.theguardian.com/technol...res-fall-elon-musk-twitter-poll-sell-off-plan

I think I have got this right reading the article. The US Senate want to pass a bill taxing unrealised gains. The higher the share price, the more tax to pay. Elon Musk has sidestepped this plan by in effect causing a decrease in value of the gains and therefore paying less tax. Yes, as a result his worth also decreases but not really a problem to a man who sees his paper wealth go from umpteen billions to a mere some billions.

It's far from a done deal, the plan doesn't currently have enough support to get through the senate. Even if it did, he hasn't sidestepped it, as he'd still have to pay it on all the rest of the shares. It's fundamentally unfair to tax people on income they haven't received and for that reason will probably fail.

    ..
    Agree.
Can you imagine all those making their 'fortunes' from Crypto having to pay tax on gains not yet realised? Pay the tax then it crashes!! Double whammy coming. Or is it ok those invested in Crypto avoid the tax?

Anyway, it ain't gonna happen. Makes no sense. You can't base tax on something that is so volatile (unreleased gains in share prices, property, commodities, crypto, whatever).

I should have used something better than sidestep. Perhaps deliberately causing the share price to fall highlighted the volatility of any such tax raising scheme. Being taxed on your paper worth? As said above, it ain't gonna happen.

if you're going for the mega wealthy, the scum you should be aiming at is the dynasties that run the world banks. they epitomise evil, but their days are numbered.
