Is Joelinton basically just a £40m Shola Ameobi?

I think you can’t compare Shola to Joelinton because Shola was in a very good team.

    And a Joelinton isn’t.

Joelinton should still have been able to display some signs of what he's capable of, and the only thing he's shown to me is that the pace and the quality of the PL when compared Austrian league is too much for him to be that effective.

Austria and England are worlds apart in quality. It's like league one vs PL.

The only thing he's remotely good at is holding the ball up and sometimes distributing it to other attacking options, but that's it. He doesn't have a great deal of pace, skill or goal threat, he doesn't create many chances, and he's not particularly clever either.

He's simply a target man. If he couldn't be used as a target man, he wouldn't be in the squad period. He was used by Bruce often with the excuse of "he's our out ball" or something. Basically he's the biggest guy there and most likely to win a ball up the pitch.

He's an attacking midfield Shola, he provides nothing much more than Shola did. He's just not as slow.

He played in the Bundesliga wide left before coming to us. Not much between there and the PL quality wise. Just a bit greater depth in the PL probably.

    Joelinton played well again yesterday.

He should be ahead of almiron and Fraser imo

Definitely should be starting. Ahead of Almiron though? No.

If I was picking one or the other right now I'd pick Joe

    Both should be playing in a 4 2 3 1 though imo

Both should be playing but taking Almiron out with our current crop of CMS would be criminal. The amount of work here puts in is understated

I was watching Miggy carefully yesterday and his work rate amounted to very little. He was basically chasing after the ball but didn’t actually make any interceptions. So it looks like he is working hard.

But the reality is he wasn’t bought for that was he and is out of position which is a shame because his assets lie elsewhere.

So right now in this team Joelinton does appear to offer slightly more.

Exactly, running around a lot doesn’t equate to working hard, Fraser runs all day but does **** all….Almiron was bought for his attacking output and unless we change the system he is going to be wasted. Big Joe did well yesterday, I think there’s a player in there somewhere and if he had proper coaching in a system that suits he might be a decent player

Yes but if he didn't do that then there would be no chasing of the ball. If he hasn't have done this then Brighton would have won comfortably

In a 4-2-3-1 with him, Almiron and Max behind Wilson, or as part of a 4-3-3 with him, Wilson and Max he can be an asset. There's the glimmer of something there.

Can someone confirm where Almiron plays for his country or ex team in US
    Same with Fraser?
JL played left of front 3
ASM played left wing in France?
I know a pro player should be able to adapt but it’s about time we started to play players in correct positions
If Howe does that I would expect improvement straight away with minimum fuss
It’s not rocket science but seems beyond our recent coaches / managers

Almiron plays off the main man. We could do this easily. Almiron just off Wilson

Basically it’s a failure of the previous owner (again) as all three are left wing forwards. Almiron was used as a 10 for Atlanta.

So we have 3 left wingers and no left back
Bruce didn’t trust Almiron to no10 role so he gets shoe horned to any position, he played RW last night?

Maybe. Hopefully Howe realises this and he addresses it so we can play Miggy in his right position.

The commentators and media in general seem to think that the only area we need to address is defence.

Whilst I partially agree. The issue is actually the formation and midfield or lack of. The defence is under constant pressure because of the way we play. Stick some more midfielders in that work hard and have some quality and then we concede less chances.

By default our defence will look better.

That formation and with a higher line of defence meaning the whole team shift up 10-20 yards means them three can press more effectively.

It’s plain to see playing them three in a higher lined team would work.

Then Hayden and Longstaff can look less exposed.

Your right mate. The thing is playing a player in a position they are not naturally good at cause problems for the teams balance.

It also increases the likelihood of mistakes and injuries.

@Roland Deschain is right in that Miggy ASM and Joelinton could play well behind Wilson provided there is less space between the groupings.

I would have no issue with ASM left side Miggy centrally and Joe right side.

Behind them 4 you could have any two DFM as their job is to link up the play.

Then for me it would be Lewis Schar Ferny and Manq.

That team has balance. Then any players that get injured or need resting just get swapped like for like and in the same positions.

Pissing about with the formation every game helps no one.

Your right. However if the three I would play ASM left because that’s where he does most damage. Miggy can play centrally as he knows that role and Joe has proved he can do it on the right.

    To me it is simple.

The thing is every yard he covers is a yard less space for the opposition.

Yes he was bought fur attacking, but that's not what role he being asked to fill, so it's not his fault and actually a credit that he's prepared to keep doing it with a smile on his face.
