Not seen Alan Pardew's interview, but according to nufc.com, they say Pardew sees Shane Ferguson as a left back. No suggestion of a more advanced role which most people suggest he would probably be better

    Thoughts?

I think he'll need to eat a hell of a lot more steak and guzzle down a few more cows of milk to bulk up for a LB.

I really hoped he'd be seen as a LW but Pardew sees him everyday.

Has he ever played on the wing for us? Think he has always played left back - not sure though. Has impressed me everytime I've seen him, but agree he would do a good job further forward

I was a little disappointed when i read this, by the way he plays he seems more of a winger then a defender and he doesn't have the stature to battle/shrug off opponents right now.

It wouldn't surprise me if Pardew changed his mind and plays him in his more natural position later on.

Think he might be saying it as we have no left back cover (in fact, we don't really have a natural left back at all) but have plenty on the left midfield. A loan deal would be good for him imo

I think he's quite suited to be a modern left back to be honest. Once he fills out a bit he'd be great at overlapping a winger who cuts inside.

The kids got loads of talent and I'm sure he'd do a great job for us wherever he played.

Great goal he scored in that game, won most of us over with that performance.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen at a football match was Shane marking Ishmael Miller at Forest. But saying that, he handled him fine and kept him quiet all night. Still a waste of what looks like a great aptitude to attacking though.

Personally, I think he's a winger, got some good dribbling.

Definite winger for me and disappointed with him being used to provide left back cover. To be fair Pardew is looking at his squad and he has an abundance of talented attacking midfielders. He probably doesn't want to lose Fergie given his obvious talent, so he is finding a way of fitting him in. I wouldn't against a loan though. He is decent at left back but I just watch him and instantly think winger.

I definitely see him as a winger but with a current options on the LW and him not going out on loan it wouldnt kill us to work on the defensive side of his game for a while, wingers need to have that as well. Hope he goes on loan to a good side next year, could be a quality player if given a chance.

I'd prefer to see him in an attacking role but he's got so much class and talent that he'd fit in anywhere.

Struggling to think of a left back that you could consider as 'strong' other than José, Abidal and Taiwo tbh.

Ashley Cole, Philipp Lahm, Coentrao, Evra are all weaklings and are possibly the best 4 left backs in the world!

Fabio from United isn't strong either

Gareth Bale can play both why can't Fergie?

Bale is a terrible left back, to be fair. I think Fergie can play both though, always thought Enrique could be a left winger as well if he wanted.

Wouldn't mind seeing Fergie as a right winger to be fair.
