I was amazed how little comment there was on here about the substance (or lack thereof) in the Budget. No doubt Socialist Sunak was successful in conning the nation with his soundbites, having leaked most of the big ticket measures over the weekend in advance.

Drinkers up and down the land will have been rejoicing when Rishi claimed that a pint of beer would get 3p cheaper and everyone in the public sector was going to get a pay rise.

The boss of Punch Taverns was on with Nigel Farage the other night on GB News. When asked when he [Farage] could expect his pint to get 3p cheaper, the pub maestro told him the reality. Some (not all) beers might become 3p cheaper at cost; however, the rise in the minimum wage for all his employees aged 23 or over meant that staff costs were going up and next April the previously announced National Insurance rises would further add to costs, so in reality the price of a pint is going to go up. That is assuming that Punch Taverns can find enough staff to run their pubs and find HGV drivers to deliver the beer to the pubs.

 

Just remind us how big a percentage of British GDP is the fishing industry.

Most of what is dredged up in the area around the Channel Islands is sold to the French. Macron is making trouble because he needs to appear the hardman as he is up for re-election next year.

Amazing that the French authorities were able to stop a British fishing vessel, impound it at Le Havre and give the captain a trial date in 2022 but when given £54 million by the British government they seem incapable of stopping dinghies in the Channel that are launching from near Calais.
