I think coming for a fairly evenly split section of County Durham, support isn't as vehement or as violent as it can be. I've always been Newcastle but it could quite easily have gone the other way...My Mam (who is a much bigger fan than my Dad, despite coming from Ireland) arrived at Newcastle Uni the year Sunderland won the FA Cup.

Last season I looked for a loss against Sunderland's name when we were behind...This season, I look for them doing us favors with clubs in and around us. If I could pick a perfect season it'd be Newcastle finishing first, Manure 2nd (after dropping a 13 point lead at xmas) and Sunderland 3rd - Good for N/E football and just simply good for the N/E!

That's correct...I'm a Sunderland fan, and if Sunderland (or England) are not involved, I can take it or leave it...

Aye 3rd form top...Newcastle first and foremost, but as the majority of my mates back home are Mackems, I find it hard to really despise them...Usually when I speak to my mates these days we end up talking about tactics (or more often than not, mistakes Bruce has made). I'd want us to win every game but wouldn't begrudge Sunderland relative success either!

Look at it this way MrRAWhite, you could watch as an interested party, if a team is in the same league as yours, good to know the strength and weaknesses of the opposition, rather than rely on media babble. That way you can form a more reliable opinion, and gauge for yourself, where your own team are getting it right or wrong, I like to have a little knowledge of any side in the league.

I think that one or two people have taken my remark about shutting the curtains if the mags were playing in my back garden a little too seriously...

One of the lads who used to come through with us had a season ticket at newcastle and would often go to watch sunderland with his dad when we were away despite being a liverpool fan!

I think what he's getting at is that he closes his blinkers if NUFC are on the box.

Me on the other hand, I'd watch football on the box no matter who was playing. Can't stand soaps or serials and apart from the odd decent film the only time the TV is on is when there's sport on!

Iv'e only been to the SOL once and that was to see Pink, who is a legend.

I like having Sunderland in the Prem and I would like to see all other NE teams there too, but to go and support them at SOL, never I just couldnt do it.

I was a teenager in the 60s when I first started to go to football matches on my own, before then I had been to N'cle with an Uncle in his 'bubble car' a couple of times but never really got on with the B & Ws although my Dad said he supported them as well but he never went to matches.
There was a mob us went to whoever was at home that saturday afternoon, some supported Sunderland some supported N'cel, we often had a game ourselves in the morning. I remember one particular time when I was in Sid James park and we were at West Ham and the announcer kept telling us the score...I took some stick. The general idea was to run on the pitch so you could see yourself on Shoot on sunday lunchtime.

This was I suppose before trouble and fights really took off, the era of the rattle, not shirts but scarfs and bobble hats.

If I am being honest toady I am not likely to go to N'cle ever again. I think one of the last games I saw there was the year when they won the InterCity Fairs Cup is that right? and the battle of St James with Glasgow rangers etc. It is a little sad that sort of friendly rivalry no longer exists.
