I don't know and it seems no one else does, which is manna from heaven for anti -vaxxers and conspiracy geeks.

Out of interest, in the 272 pages of this thread has there been anyone who’s actually changed their minds on COVID?

It seems there are a few on here well and truly down the rabbit hole, but has any amount of arguing on the internet got anyone out?

I'd put money on the answer being no.

Arguing on the internet only ever seems to push people to ever more extreme positions.

You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

I'd say there's a fair number of us on this thread who are open to bits of new science and data and revising our position as the situation evolves. But you can see others who are determined to hold their position as a matter of faith rather than reason. You're never going to reach them, all you can do is counter some of the more outrageous and harmful statements.

While its good news that death rates are still relatively low in the UK (compared to earlier waves of cases), the high number of cases is still a concern. People are still in hospital with this, seriously ill even if they're not dying, and COVID cases require 2-3x staff per patient as non-COVID cases thanks to the nursing protocols. If hospitals are still overwhelmed with cases then they're still unable to treat non-COVID cases, operations can't happen because the support staff aren't there. It's still a big deal.

That's a bit vague - views on what specifically? The science? The vaccine? Mask wearing? Lockdown? Furlough scheme? My faith in other human beings?

Some of mine have. Some haven't

I was originally in favour of a lockdown here in Sweden. It never happened and I am now glad it didn't and think that the fact we didn't lock down is a contributing factor to us only having 17,000 active cases.

On masks I've changed my mind twice. From thinking them unnecessary, to thinking they help stop transmission (if not contraction), to now thinking the benefit is marginal. However, I will wear them if mandated, like on a flight, even though the air is changed completely every 3 minutes.

I've always been pro-vaccine so that hasn't changed.

I originally thought it would be a "flash in the pan" like MERS, SARS or Bird Flu now I think it will become Endemic.

EDIT: My views didn't change from reading posts on here though <laugh>

This is almost my exact view too, but I think my views were influenced by working in Sweden in 2020 when we were in various lockdowns.

Im double vacc’d & trust the science.

I don’t trust the data published by the gov to try to scare us

Reading this thread it's alarming how many opinions fly in the face of known facts on the subject. It isn't like football where it's all opinion - there is known science on the effectivity of masks, vaccines and so on and there seems to be a fair amount of people ignoring that or choosing to believe conspiracy theories instead.

Obviously, what you do with that information is open to debate and people will have different views on that which is of course fine, but if you're saying for example that you don't believe that masks do anything at all, that's just conspiracy theory ****e and you should be asking yourself what made you want to believe that.

    This is one example.

I can't stand this government, but where on earth would you get the idea that they want us to be more scared of covid than we should be? Have you listened to anything that people in government have said in the last year? They talk all the time about how people shouldn't cower in fear from it, how we need to stop working from home and so on, and they resisted/delayed implementing restrictions for as long as possible. I can't imagine how you could possibly arrive at the conclusion that the government wants us to be more scared of covid, based on the evidence available, other than being sucked in by one of the these YouTube conspiracy loons.

On COVID and the science - not many, no. The main one was that I thought that a vaccine was the way out (haven't changed that view), but I thought it would take at least 18 months to get one developed and was very glad to be wrong on that.

Have I changed my mind based on what I've read here? About Covid, no. But about my fellow human beings, what they think of it all and how they are reacting then yes, I've learned bits and pieces and changed my opinions accordingly.

    Im no conspiracy theorist.

they push a covid positive as though it’s a death sentence!
Not sure of the exact numbers something like…
95% of positive cases require zero treatment
95% of cases have zero symptoms
50% of covid cases in hospital caught covid in hospital
If you catch covid you are highly unlikely to catch it twice.

Then there’s the biggie - the death numbers the from or with & the ridiculous “28 day rule”

its not just me who thinks the numbers are wrong - here’s the head of uk statistics

    Published today.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/20...pital-patients-governments-data-not-admitted/

The misuse of statistics has been one of the major criticisms levelled at politicians during the pandemic, with dubious figures and modelling often cited to justify draconian interventions.

So it was reassuring to find out on Thursday that the head of the UK Statistics Authority was also concerned about the misrepresentation of data by the Government.

Speaking at the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs committee, Sir David Norgrove told MPs that “we’ve intervened more during the pandemic and made more comments than in the years before”.

“With statistics, it’s usually cock-up rather than conspiracy,” he added. “They are under pressure and they get themselves into a hole and we have to help dig them out.”

Yet despite this, nothing seems to be changing.

At a press conference from Downing Street on Wednesday evening, Dr Jenny Harries, the chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, took the public through slides showing that there were currently 7,891 people in hospital with Covid in the UK.

What she failed to mention is that this figure does not only include people admitted with Covid, but also those who test positive for coronavirus while in hospital for another condition.

Hospitals were instructed to distinguish between the two groups earlier this year, but so far it has not filtered down into the official figures.
