How has Mason Mount lasted 90mins?? Thought he was Southgate's pet!! Ballon D'or....your having a laugh!!
People were pleading with Southgate to play more attacking players. I liked tonight's line up, but it didn't really work. England were much more open and Hungary played well. A much better side than the one in Budapest. But was it the more attacking line up or the fact that Kane, Sterling, Mount and Shaw all had poor games? Saka was poor when he came on too and Watkins missed a good chance at the end. I suppose those two factors combined contributed. I'd certainly want Phillips back in the midfield as soon as he's fit. Rice isn't quite up to it for me, so maybe Bellingham alongside Phillips with Foden ahead of them? Foden was marked well tonight, but his class will tell imo. I suppose we've been very spoilt by England's success and these things do happen from time to time. No need to panic, but I don't think we'll see two eights against the better sides. I'd leave Mount out to get Foden in.
It's not really that bad as not too far to travel and no different from championship Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday...... As long as he didn't pick up an injury.... and can keep scoring....
I just think the balance of the team was wrong tonight, Hungary were well organised and pressured us well. Taking Grealish off was odd as he was worrying them whenever around the box. Kane's form is abysmal and if Southgate picks on form he wouldn't start at present. Albania and San Marino should see us through easily but we're making hard work of it...
The England game was a hard watch.... not a lot of free flowing football.... Hungary happy to stick 9 or 10 behind the ball and say to England, go on play around us or through us.... and England couldn't really do either.... Sir Harry of North London looks so out of form it's untrue.....is that a carry over of his league form? I've no idea as I haven't watched hardly any premier league games this season, but something is amiss.... Still keeps it interesting into November games and another point gained towards qualifying...
But the balance was what so many people were calling for, only playing one holding midfielder. Yourself included I believe and you've often accused Southgate of being too negative. Fairly too at times. I'm not convinced Rice is good enough at this level, especially on his own holding. Perversely, that more attacking system may work better against teams who attack us more. Credit to Hungary tonight though.
Wrong line up Col and Foden wasted again ! I'm sorry but Mount and Sterling shouldn't be in our best 11 ! Kane is totally out of form too at the moment and looks awful although he would be in our best 11. Southgate must play our best players in their best positions and that means utilising Foden as a number 10 ! Grealish substitution pathetic, only player that looked capable of beating a man and creating something. Bellingham has to be put in this side immediately ffs as an attacking midfielder. Mount should be a bench player in my eyes , not in same league as Foden, Grealish or Saka. Those 3 are your match winners and need to start every game in a tournament
Dykes played 99 minutes again tonight ffs, thanks alot Scotkand. That's him out for another 2 weeks. Chair an unused sub for Morocco, hope he hasn't got a knock. Mitrovic came on for Serbia on 65 mins and didn't get injured ! Oh well
The second half was pretty ****. I think we might need to get rid of Southgate. We need to get a top manager in. Southgate lacks the ability to change us in difficult games. We have a good squad here but like Belgium we have the wrong manager. We need Guardiola or Klopp to realise our full potential. Pay them whatever they need but get rid of Southgate.' Thanks very much, you've got us out of the Alladyce days, but here's a nice pay off.
There's not a prayer of getting either of them, getting a top manager not always the way just look at Capello and Sven. It won't be easy finding an improvement on Southgate. Tactically he is lacking yes but the players play out of their skin for him, that can't be readily replicated !
I think we're lumbered with Southgate for the foreseeable future. His shortcomings are there for all to see, failure to change tactically at vital points in matches the most obvious but also seemingly unwilling to take any risk. He's good enough to get us to latter stages of tournaments because we have such high quality players but his lack of tactical acumen is what prevents us going all the way...
Sterling has been one of England's best abd most consistent players for years, so I disagree about him. It may be that the team begins to evolve without him starting, as we have a lot of options. Saka could well be his replacement, but he was awful when he came on. There was something strangely off last night, because so many players had poor games by our now very high standards. Kane was terrible, but I don't see anyone who can play in his place. Abraham? Nah. Greenwood could be our next centre forward but he's not even in the squad. As for Foden, he can play anywhere he's that good, but last night his space was too congested. Does he play 10 for City? My midfield 3 would be Phillips, Bellingham and Foden ahead of them. Up top, Grealish, Kane and Sterling/Saka. Unfortunately, kane and Sterling are out of form, but class is permanent.
Surely he took a risk last night with such an attacking line up? Rice was badly exposed and he's not good enough or mobile enough to cope in that situation imo.
Wish Dykes would stop scoring goals for the national side and stop showing everyone else how good he is. The last thing want is for a basement PL team to steal him from us. Yes, l know l'm selfish but how often have sold our best players. I just want a decent team of our to make a go of it for the year.
Someone might be stupid enough to give us silly money. We have the free-scoring Bonnemeister to come back in so it’s all good.
Faroe Islands 0-1 Scotland: Steve Clarke praises match-winner Lyndon Dykes Last updated on12 October 202112 October 2021.From the sectionScotland please log in to view this image Lyndon Dykes scored his fourth goal for Scotland in as many games to snatch victory over the Faroe Islands Scotland match-winner Lyndon Dykes "sometimes doesn't get the credit he deserves", says boss Steve Clarke. Dykes' 86th-minute goal clinched a huge 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over the Faroe Islands. It was the Australia-born striker's fourth in as many games, but he will be suspended for next month's penultimate qualifier in Moldova after picking up a booking. "He made a good choice, didn't he, coming to play for us," said Clarke. Late Dykes goal rescues Scotland in Faroe Islands Reaction and as it happened How you rated the players in Torshavn "I'm pleased with Lyndon. I know what I get from him, what he brings to the team. "Sometimes he doesn't get the credit he deserves, but this run and the goals and important points he's winning us is just part of the whole set-up. "When you get to this stage, all the teams are going to get the two yellows that rule players out. It's a chance for someone else to be a hero next month." With time running out on a frustrating night for Scotland, a Nathan Patterson cross ricocheted in off Queens Park Rangers striker Dykes' chest, the goal confirmed after a lengthy VAR check to net the national side's fourth win in a row. The victory means Clarke's side will secure second place in group F and a play-off berth by collecting three points in Chisinau on 12 November. ADVERTISEMENT But they will travel to Moldova without Dykes, who equalled a Scottish scoring record set in 1969, and Ryan Christie, who is also suspended. "It's a group of players that have shown they've got the character to go to difficult places and get a result for their country," added Clarke. "It's a game everyone thinks we should win comfortably, but (there are) no easy games. It took Denmark a long time to win here. Everyone who comes here knows they've been in a battle. "We didn't play as well as we could first-half, that's definite, but we were much better second-half. We were more aggressive with our passing, tried to get behind them and cause problems, and that led to the winning goal."
