I assume teams put clauses in the contracts saying "you go to jail, we stop paying you" or something in similar? They're not obligated to keep paying the player while he's rotting behind bars?

 

They don't really have to. The player can't fulfil his contractual obligations, so they can fire him.
A lot of clubs have clauses about not dragging the club through the mud, too.

 

He would be deemed not to be fulfilling the terms of his contract by not being available to train and play so they can simply terminate his contract ... pretty sure that is how employment law works from my memory as a union rep

 

however if they have value most clubs pinch their nose and carry on paying them so they are still under contract when they come out examples being Molby , Adams , Barton though considering the charges against Mendy if he has found guilty his football career is over .

Even if the Ronaldo claims were legit the victim would have had to shave her head and move to Peru or Argentina under a New ID or most likely be decomposing in some random lake. He's too well protected and commercially big for something like that to ever get out.
