I bet most garage bands have played Van Morrison’s Gloria at some stage or another, great riff and easy to ad lib to - Morrison himself used to stretch it out to 15 or 20 minutes early in his career. The Doors took it and made it rather sinister, and uncomfortable listening nowadays, but my favourite by far is Patti Smith’s almost entirely rewritten song, which again varies in length according to mood. The first line might be the greatest in rock music. At 74 she played the Albert Hall the other day. I’ve never seen her live, a big miss.
This is a great song although ' Because the Night was the Night' was her biggest hit, and I think was written by Bruce Springsteen is the better song for me. She reminds me a bit of Joan Armatrading who had a hit with Me myself I, great songs in the 70's. Great female rock ballads. Similar age too, Joan Armartrading has just released a new album.

When I was about ten, I won a 7inch single of the Booker T and the MGs version of this as it was floating around the charts after being in Quadrophenia. It was at a youth club somewhere around Oldfield Circus in Northolt , and I won a dance competition **** know's how, as I'm bloody useless!
