Bog books are the best. I'm sure the amount of reading I do on the toilet will eventually lead to me developing the old tap and spiles in later life, but it's a great place to read where nobody can bug you.

A book that I always thought was overrated is On The Road by Jack Kerouac, it's such a so called classic but I have tried reading it twice and given up. In my opinion writers like John Fante and Charles Bukowski had a much better flow with their writing and could tell a story.

Wait Until Spring Bandini by John Fante is mt all time favourite, most would say Ask The Dust with this author but my choice is just that.

Missed this first time around, Descartes is fantastic to read especially Discourse. I also had a nice book that covered his thoughts along with those of Hobbes and Locke in great detail but I can't seem to find it now (and I won't add another book search to this thread either!). When you look at writers like them, it's quite amazing to think of the bravery it must have taken to publish some of their thoughts in the time periods that they did.

I love James Patterson, very graphic but really good read.

For the ladies Maeve Binchy and Jenny Colgan great reads and good laughs.

I really wanted to comment on this but there are too many books to mention and if i mention one i'll be here all day. I'll just say this:

Joyce, Hemingway, Sartre, Self, Fitzgerald, Zola, Homer, Watts, Isherwood, Woolf, Shelley (both)...oh Coupland if you like Easton-Ellis. I have to stop now.

The Flashman books by George MacDonald Fraser are a really good read. Great fun and educational as well due to his attention to detail and historical accuracy.

Mostly read History books though and there are too many to mention. The one that really got me started (read it when I was 14) and therefore changed my outlook on reading was "In Search of the Indo-Europeans" by J.P. Mallory. Book discussing the theories relating to where the Indo-European peoples originally lived before separating and migrating round the world. Very interesting section showing the linguistical similarities of many modern day languages. I need to get out more ...

    Ta.

    Will give it a go.

By the way, earlier you asked if Heart of Darkness was any good. Personally, I think it's great.

Also recommend The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad. They're a bit more straight forward novel than HoD.

Read HofD last week for uni. Was a bit like swimming through treacle to be honest, but I still liked it.

Also in the middle of reading Junkie, by Burroughs. Would recommend that. And Naked Lunch too, but that's a bit heavier..

Naked Lunch gave me The Fear. It was the most unpleasant thing I have ever read.
