Alex MacDonald , after the Wigan defeat, has said that the players will learn from their mistakes - but - will Steve Evans ? I do not claim to be a football manager genius - but - there were tactics that did not work... and one, in my humble opinion, that had limited success at Cambridge ((( Yes, I appreciate that Akinde 'flicked' on the ball for Oliver's goal. ))) There is far too much room down our flanks. Every team is having so much time and space when we play 3 at the back.... Whilst I can see the benefit of an extra player in midfield - what use will he be if we 'lump' the ball (( there were a few times v Wigan when Cumming kicked the ball straight into the Wigan keeper's arms ! ))) - if we're going to by-pass the midfield we may as well play 3 up front. Then there were the corner routines ( of Wigan ) - where, a couple of times, Gills had nobody outside our penalty area - and the Wigan 'last man', was well inside the Gills half. I don't think it's a viable (long term )idea to play Oliver and Akinde together...They are too 'similar.' Akinde is simply too immobile (( and I don't mean the Italian forward ! )) He is too static. He doesn't appear to jump off the floor to try to win a ball - and certainly cannot run for any flick-ons that Oliver invariably wins - thus rendering the micro second of 'possession' as totally useless....... One of the two big men needs to (be allowed time to ) form a partnership with a striker who can latch onto the ball - you know - somebody like Cody..... or perhaps Kelman (( or are we keeping him tucked up for a return to Arsenal - sorry, I meant QPR ? )).

He doesn't appear to jump off the floor to try to win a ball Nor did Bayo. - and certainly cannot run for any flick-ons that Oliver invariably wins. Bayo was a tank so exactly the same. Although I did see him run once. Now to the point: One of the two big men needs to (be allowed time to ) form a partnership with a striker who can latch onto the ball - you know - somebody like Cody..... or perhaps Kelman <<<<<<this! Boom!
brb - as I wrote the original post, I was already thinking of Akinfenwa - and know full well that he and Akinde are very similar - and, if I am honest, the same 'criticism ' could be levelled at Bayo - but - at least he had a player ( Cody ) to complement Bayo - not replicate it - with virtually no chance of an end product.---- The 'partnership' of Oliver and Akinde worked at Cambrridge--- more by luck than judgement.... We can't afford to deploy this tactic for too many games - in my opinion, it won't produce enough points for L1 survival....One ( preferrably Oliver ), of the two, needs to have Kelman, Lloyd, Sithole?? within 5-10 yards etc.
Looks like my original post when Mr Evans was first employed. WHY ???? he is a bully with limited foresight. tunnelled vision hoof it football and his answer F%&^&^&^IYJHUT&^DTW%YB language when questioned. We did look like having a chance to go up last season? and I am sure if we had he would not be in charge. Not sure of a way forward as Div 1 is an amazing tough Div. Money is the way forward to some extent and Mr Scully does,nt or has,nt got the clout Please prove me wrong
Oddly enough, I've still got more faith in Evans then I ever could have imagined. Maybe I'm just going mad, or maybe I was already crazy in the first place.
I've been forever confident with our ability and league position under Steve Evans, but we are now getting to the serious side of the business in the run up to Christmas, yes I've mentioned that dreaded season of all things supposedly merry. Well there ain't going to be much merry about Saturday. Looking at Wycombe defeats, you either need to be as good has Sunderland or work out the MK Don tactics and how they did it. The latter gives me hope, the former forget it. We will never forget they once relegated us and embarrassingly so, and I'm not expecting any favours this time either. That's not me being down about the Gills, we have our qualities, but on the back of recent results, and looking at Wycome sittng 5th in the league, I have to be realistic.... Wycombe 3-0 Gills. Oh and just to add to our misery, we have Sunderland up next, jeez is it halloween yet.
Sadly, this is not going to be our season, We do have a great recent run of recent results against wigan BUTTTTTT and a BIG BUT They are unbeaten at home this season and not a single draw. Last week two goals down and came back to win 4-3 Not sure what our tatics are but I can see us on the bus home pointless Wanderers 3 v 1 MKB McCleary 2, Vokes 1 MacDonald 1 )
