I have never been a proponent or user of anything to do with social media and I am starting to believe in my decision. The big question for me is what are these billionaires who started these sites intending to do with their babies because it seems they have been telling porkies about the more sinister side of the platforms. The news yesterday about the inside whistle blower telling stories about profit at any cost as long as the brain washed punters show up in droves to pay homage to the savage beast. One of the few remaining pleasures I have in life is watching the masses walking around in a fog following a small hand held device as if it was life itself and at the same time passing by the more important things that really matter. Apparently a large section of the world's population fell over when 3 of the most used social media sites vanished from the air apparently with "technical issues" but to the cynicals like me perhaps it's disappearance may have more sinister tones. The days of sanity are fast fading in to the darkness and have been getting closer by the passing of time so how long will it be before we hand over more control of our lives to either our devices or the foreign entities trying to control the rest of the world and it's societies? Social media has been an issue for me for a long time and perhaps the international break will give us a chance to air our views. As an example of my dislike for social media and devices during our recent long awaited family reunion, after over 2 years, within 5 minutes my reunited family were on their individual devices barely surfacing during the week long visit yet alone engaging in meaningful conversation. What a shame Ann and I wasted over 2000 pounds for the privilege of just being there- unheard.
My dreams came true because I knew someone would point out that this is indeed a social media site. Not quite on the same level with Facebook et al.
Difference though on Facebook you 99% know the people you’re talking to (unless you’re like me and can’t remember faces ) On here you’re talking to someone you wouldn’t know if you were sat next to them in the stands. I’ve a Twitter account, but find that is just disagreement most the time.
A lot of truth there ROD and I have only ever met one of the 606ers at Wembley when I paid him for buying my tickets to the Paint Trophy Final. According to some of the vaccine doubters over here that are berating the health care system for feeding them poison but at least we know that next time they are ill social media will obviously cure all their ills. I'll stick to health care professionals thank you very much. Sad old world really.
At least on here there aren’t too many of us and on the whole we are respectful of each other. It’s why I post on here , but not on OTIB for example
I probably would know you RoD if I was sat next to you in the stand. There can’t be many City fans that sound like a member of Goldie Looking Chain
a tenous one, but yes although centred around a singular subject matter .. BCFC [and foorball] we do occasionally broach other subjects .. but every individual has the choice read/ participate/ ignore/etc but you wont have the same profiteering that goes with it it … although adverts help to support it is not multidimensional..
I moved around a lot as a child. Caldicot as a baby, Stockwood till 4 then Chepstow till 12 then Gloucester till 15 then Chepstow till 20 Then Bristol (north and south) till 27 and then Chepstow until last year then Rogiet. So I’m basically sound like a mongrel. Bristolians think I’m Gloucester, Gloucester think I’m Bristol. But when I’m drunk and in Newport I get this Welsh twang back.
I'm on Facebook which I use from time to time, but I wouldn't class myself as a 'frequent' user - for example; I hadn't even realised that it went down the other day until I saw the reports in the news! I check into the odd venue when travelling - using it a bit like an instant digital postcard (although I DO still send the occasional 'real' postcard to close family). I find the Facebook Messenger feature really useful and use that more than the main Facebook. I use it a bit like WhatsApp - it's good for communicating with groups of people - particularly when members of your group don't have desk jobs so wouldn't see emails coming through easily. I use Messenger to contact friends in Gibraltar because they seem to prefer that method for some reason. I have several WhatsApp groups - one for my 5-a-side football group, one for close family, one for 'extended' family - we hold a group Zoom call once a fortnight which started during lockdown and was really popular so we kept it going. There is also a 'Lads Chat' group with mates from work. Both WhatsApp and Messenger are useful for making free international calls - all you need is an internet connection. The 'Marketplace' feature on Facebook is useful too. I do have an Instagram account which I used ONCE back in 2020 and can't remember how to log into anymore!!! We use WeChat to communicate with our eldest in China, which is the Chinese version of WhatsApp. Western social media is banned in China and can only be used with a VPN, but WeChat works fine and we use it to make free calls to her too. It's available on the AppStore and for Android, but it's not widely used here in the UK. I think that Social Media (like any media really) can be really useful and I make full use of it. It doesn't control me though. The only time it would REALLY annoy me if unavailable is if I wanted to speak to my daughter in China and couldn't use WeChat. For everyone else I'd just make a phone call or send an email if the media was down.
After the charity yacht leg down the west coast of Scotland about 4 years ago whilst I was driving back down from FORT WILLIAM my other 3 mates set up a face book account on my phone have looked at it and sent the occasional comment also have a whats app group for my hobbyist friends and my contacts for my grandkids but not really on it occasionally phone dings and I check to see why … i am one of the upright peeps … walk with straight posture … or sit with head up … not one of the going back to where we came from …..
Don't use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and never have (or will) I do use LinkedIn, Whats App and Pinterest
