That's a young John Hawley, in case you were wondering. The last amateur player to play in the professional game. Us oldies will always remember his screamer at the North Stand end v Sunderland.

Is he still in the Beverley area dealing in antiques? Or did he move on to pastures new?

The artist has the nameplate as amber at the side of his painting but black on the loco. So it may have been a black one put up at BP after it was scrapped in 1960. The one thing it never was on the loco was black and amber stripes.
Following the success of building the Tornado a number of other new builds are being done. One is an engine of this class. To save arguments about club names it will not be named after one but Spirit Of Sandringham, Sandringham being the name of the locomotive class.

After the usual skinful of ale in those days I heard an enormous roar whilst in the bogs and arrived back to be told about what a goal I had missed.:emoticon-0107-sweat

Last I heard he was in North Cave, my wife and I stayed at his place which was an antique shop and B&B (whilst visiting my mum in South Cave) but that was 10 years ago.

Besides they won't be selling him until 12m is offered by all accounts - thats assuming they're here in January.

    Looks to me like t
I'm pretty sure he's still about and occasionally we've seen him at the KC/KCOM/MTM stadium doing a bit of socialising for the club - he doesn't look much like his old photographs (but then who does?)

I speak to John on a regular basis as he is now a director on the board of the OSC.
He has a very dry humour and is a genuinely pleasant man.
On our regular pre match zoom chats, he will often talk about his career as a footballer.
He was as you quite rightly say the last amateur in the professional game. This was never an issue for him.

He lives round the corner from me, I see him all the time, we used to be drinking buddies, but both of us are pretty much off the sauce nowadays.

I've seen him at City a couple of times, also around Beverley. His missus, Caroline, is often on Bargain Hunt. A relation of my sister bought the Hawleys house in Beverley off them a couple of years ago, Great footballer in his time.

I must've only been 10 or 11 when John Hawley started playing for us but I remember him well.Yes,he was a great footballer with good skills and trickery,he played in a very good Hull City side which is testament to how good he was that he's remembered by so many of us.

I have a photo somewhere in early BR green with blue plates. My grandad was fairly.in to that sort of thing. Not only that, Dapol do a model of it in BR late cest (1955 onwards) and the nameplate is blue. It was only painted Amber for a very short period in its working life.

You are correct that it was never painted stripes.

    Seen that photo.
Always assumed they would have altered it to amber as it was painted black during the war, as they all were.
Always used to look at these plates at other stadiums. Thought Norwich one was altered to show stripes not there originally like we at one time did but found out their kit at the time was a Blackburn style one and they kept that one with alternate blocks. Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur were temporarily renamed to East Anglian and City of London and given a streamlined casing like thec
A4s to run boat trains from Norwich. Didn't keep them long as it made maintenance difficult.

My old memory may be playing tricks on me but I seem to remember a Q&A with John Hawley in the matchday programme where he confessed one of the things he wanted to achieve was to hit the clock on the North Stand roof at Fer ark !

I can remember players capable of doing that. Of course they were actually aiming for the goal.

What's the point of them buying if this is their intention. Agreed they may put up prices, mess us about and the rest, but it won't get fans and therefore sponsorship. So what's the point

That's right. I was in the North stand when he achieved it. I assume he was actually aiming at the goal and we all got showered in rust!
