In order to while away the relative boredom of the international break, I'm offering you a chance for one journey in my virtual time machine.

You may go back to any time and any geographical location and you may change one outcome only.

    However, beware the rules.

1.One outward and return journey only.

    2. You can't mess with free will in a robotic / hypnotic way but feel free to use force of will or simple force!

    3. Think through the consequences carefully since once changed, can't be unchanged.

    4. Do share your reasoning as to why you've chosen your particular event over similar ones.

    5. Your speculation about the effects of the intervention will be interesting.

    6. You may not change simply your own circumstances, nor your immediate family.

    7. You may bend the rules if you can justify with good reason!

    Happy travels!

    Carrow Road, April 17th 1976.....

Change that result, who know's what would've happened in our little corner of West London. By losing that game we handed Liverpool the leg-up they needed to dominate English, and European, football for the next 15 years.

If we'd won the league, would we have maintained that level of superiority over that length of time - probably not, you only have to look at Derby or Forest, both title winners in the 70s - but the fun's in the guessing!

It would all be rather pointless as even if you attempted to “change” any given event, the general timeline would continue. For example, many people will say they would go back and kill Hitler/Stalin/Pol Pot etc etc before they motivated the terrible deed that they did and save millions of lives. My theory is that it wouldn’t matter, events would happen with a new dictator in place and the same things would happen anyway.
I ‘spose thinking about it, it’s a bit “Final Destination”……..you can’t change the eventual outcome of history.

    That’s my theory anyway

I'd definitely go back in time and take John Terry's dad somewhere other than where he was the day he met his wife. Any world would be a substantially better place without that maggot in it !. Obviously going back to the day JFK was assassinated would be tempting just to find out who was really responsible or to Whitechapel 1888, to find out who Jack the ripper was.

Not very imaginative though <laugh> How about a trip along Haight Ashbury in 67, or spending some time at Stonhenge when it was at it's peak of powers, or Machu Pichu when the Incas were there. That would be something.

Ok I’d go back to the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 to see all those iconic bands that I’ve seen on tv but never got to see at their peak.
I’d also seek out my best mates brother, take away his stash of LSD and sit him down in the early hours to see the last ever UK performance of Jimi Hendrix before he died a few months later.
At least then he would remember being there.

I've rethought it and would like to go into the future by 50 years, where Qpr are the reigning Premier League and Champions League holders and are on an unbeaten run of 300 games :1980_boogie_down:

But you couldn’t cure malaria in one instant…you’d need an untold amount of time. Whereas the Hitler killing is indeed an instant hit (excuse the pun)

Maybe we’re being a bit deep in doing this :emoticon-0140-rofl:

For me, it would have to be a major tragedy of the order of The Titanic, 9/11 or the Boxing Day tsunami or an earthquake such as the one in Armenia in 87 (I think) that killed a 100 000 people!

Of course one issue is running around like a prophet of doom warning people, say about the Titanic, and being dismissed as a lunatic.

It's also very tempting to save individuals such as George Floyd or Sarah Everard. Although horrible beyond belief, hopefully some good will come from those tragedies - little consolation to their grieving families.

I think it has to be 9/11 for me. Avert that and hope that the 'war on terror' is not started with the tragic waste of human life that came in its wake.

Of course if we stop 9/11 then we find that the following year, terrorists launch multiple attacks on the Houses of Parliament, Buck Palace and Downing Street!

Maybe Staines is right and there is a degree of fatalism that is inescapable. Still worth a go though!

Fair enough , but would surely depend how far back in time you went. You'd just have to invent everything you'd need to cure it first lol.

War on terror and everything related been going on a long long time before 9/11 pal. How far back do you go, way too convoluted. The great thing about history are all these events no matter whether they're good, bad, evil whatever are all set in stone and can never be altered. Unless some genius in the future builds a tardis

I'd love to have been around in 1911 just to tell Scott to leave earlier and take dogs instead of machinery, just to get to the South Pole before Amundsen. Of course a few months of warning about the Titanic could've been given too, whether they would be heeded is another thing
