This is not a new phenomena nothing has significantly changed goal scoring wise since the 2017/2018 season when Diedhiou scored 14 and Reid scored 19, since then, our main 2 strikers have delivered around 20 goals between them per season on a regular basis. IMHO it is mainly down to having players who can get us into very promising positions but as soon as the opponents 18 yard box is in sight, we totally run out of ideas, our crossing I believe has improved but Martin, Weimann and Wells are not the sort of strikers to get on to the end of even the improved crossing. We lack the player who can thread a ball low into the box and unlock defences. I agree about Weimann but in his defence over the past 3 or 4 seasons when things are not going well for us as a team he is either pushed wide or back into midfield.
I 100% agree with that, but I will go a step further.........We lack the player who can thread a ball through, but I also think we lack the player/striker to anticipate the moves..... That gel and understanding is what's missing IMO
As I said this has been a problem for at least 3 seasons, to be fair to the strikers especially Wells, it must become soul destroying making runs and not receiving the delivery, that is normally the strongest part of his game as a striker and we have never had the midfield to deliver that for him, I could see why he scored so many goals for QPR they always seem to have 2 midfielders who can thread balls into the area. How ever on the positive side we finally have a midfield that can compete and not get beaten up every game, it's just the creativity missing now, but it's something that needs to be addressed along with a plan B type striker to get on to the crosses.
We are starting to get injuries again which is worrying due to small squad , Wells, Jay, HNM, Baker to name a few.
It looks like Wells and HNM might not be too bad, not sure about the other 2. As you quite rightly on another post it gives the youngsters a chance, now is the time for players like ODowda to finally step up to the plate.
