Does it matter if he didn't define it previously? However, Fleming described Bond a few times as looking like (the American) Hoagy Carmichael. please log in to view this image
I've read Casino Royale, the first Bond novel. In the very early pages (set in a casino) Fleming writes this "He was playing the maximum on the first and last dozens. Then the Englishman, Mister Bond, increased his winnings to exactly three million over the two days." Fleming was so impressed by Connery in Dr. No that in the next book he wrote after the release of the film (can't remember if it's The Spy Who Loved Me or You Only Live Twice) he introduced a bit of background information on his parents - Scottish father and Swiss mother to fit with Connery's character. I do have to correct myself on one thing though, my memory playing tricks on me, Bond is described as blue eyed and dark haired.
Nice! flemings own career with 30AU was blended nicely by him writing for the movies and really being willing to adapt. Bond in the end is the ultimate adaptor as we have moved from russians to criminals to terrorists etc as threats and in the end action and being the man everyone wants to be is the secret. I'd still have no issue with idris elba as a bond bar the fact he is too bloody old but i would have an issue with it being a woman as simply it would make no sense to the fan base. You'd have to change from being the man you want to be to be the woman you want to be with.
Modern film-makers have no respect for the tradition of a film series - witness some of the appalling "reboots" we're continually ambushed by these days. As you said earlier, they could easily create new characters to fit a story that they want to tell - but of course their motive is to make money, not offer some new and compelling narrative, so they shamelessly exploit the popularity of a long-standing tradition whilst pissing all over it. I hardly ever go to the cinema these days, and I don't have Netflix or Sky Movies or whatever - I'm quite content to reserve my contempt until they manage to make it onto ordinary telly. Incidentally, Daniel Craig really doesn't do it for me in the Bond role - no amount of expensive tailoring can make him appear suave and sophisticated.
He is more of a SAS look than what you say. Never going to be suave. Stick a green wool hat on him and come black out. I agree it's about money. The ****ers (and they are) who decide to demand the next bond is a woman dont care about seeing the thing it's just an agenda. It would end up not being say SALT (super movie, could have been a proper franchise but was wasted) it would end up like Ghostbusters, a comedic parody full of touchy feely ****. The audience for bond is primarily male, a minority of women going to look at the actor but very few actually that I to the whole genre. If you alienate the fans it will bomb faster than a lazenbie movie
Barbara Brocoli has said that Bond is a man and that its not going to be a woman. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was part of the writing team has also said the same and that she would rather that a female equivalent was created and instead and said she couldn't comment if she was already working on said equivalent.
absolutely right too! apparently this person did a good job writing the movie and expanding the bond character etc but in the end guess what? they ignore the timothy dalton movies as usual where a really good bond was shown as well. I see absolutely no reason why they shouldn't expand the 00 franchise. the Bourne think where renner was brought in was done badly so a good 00 licensed to kill agent whos a woman. great fire ahead but you CANNOT take 007 james bond and make it a woman. You might as well set fire to the studio as that. IMO SALT would be an absolutely super level of movie to target, it was an absolutely crying shame joli threw that franchise in the bin. really good thriller.
Since they dropped the gadgets that Bond was known for it's just become another action film, like the Bourne films.
Don’t understand the need to have woman play James Bond. His names James Bond… If want a woman to play a spy, just create a whole new character in a spin off for it.
I doubt he really thinks it should be a woman. He's a virtue signaller extraordinaire. He's far too easily manipulated to be a real leader. He needs others to tell him what his opinion is. Unless he's trying to get rid of Angela Rayner and putting her forward for the role
Already been done. Called her Modesty Blaise if I remember rightly, although more tongue in cheek/comedy than Bond. 1966 I think
Look anyone who had a good week by having tories called scum etc etc and then go play the rubbish cultural appropriation rubbish to court a certain type is a moron.
