I normally think that where you are after Christmas is a good indicator in the top part of the table of where you will likely finish. Only two teams who have had an outstanding start to the season have totally collapsed in the New Year, one was Tranmere Rovers, can't remember the year, and the other was my lot Gillingham in more recent times, but before Sunderland came down (I think). Obviously the January loan window plays a big part to teams fortunes, my lot dramatically improved last season after the loan window, just a shame we didn't start like it through to Christmas, so consistency is the answer and avoiding injury to your star players. My first target in L1 is always to get to the 50 point mark as soon as possible, the minimum required to avoid relegation.
I think that was the accepted measure when points were 2 for a win. Don’t know if it still holds good.
Milwall in 1995, came to Roker top of the league and we hammered them 6-0. They ended up getting relegated and we went up as champions. Edit not in the third tier of course.
Aye, the PL years were the reverse - absolutely gash for 32 games then panicking at the prospect of a wage drop and suddenly the performances lift and we stay up by the skin of our teeth
Using same formula would give us 92 points which based on last year would make us champions and we would be 12 points in front of the third placed club .
John Kay wasn't playing I think, wasn't Darius at right back? Could be wrong as it was a long time ago.
You are probably right mate, my memory plays tricks on me. I remember Russell tearing them apart There was a game at Roker where we won easy and at the end Kay went through and scored but ref blew up. I only remember because me and a few mates always had a daft bet on him to score anytime at the bookies bottom of fulwell. That was maybe a few years before though thinking about it, probably nearer 91. Memories eh!
In fact the more I think about it the more I remember. I drove a car full up from midlands for that Milwall game and we stayed over for the night at one of the lads mams. It was definitely after I used to threw good money away on a 40/1 full back who never threatened a goal.
Looking at your result today, were you playing with fate, suggesting Sunderland are going to do what Wall did back in 1995, otherwise I'm not see the relation to my post that you quoted?
Think latest results just show anybody can beat anybody else in this league, no one is immune as we found out yesterday. Pre-season favourites us, Wednesday, Ipswich etc all lost and so it will go on, there are a lot of teams playing decent football and I think the hoof ball days are numbered, just need to sort out the dark arts and time wasting and watching FOOTBALL might be enjoyable again. OaU.
