Apart from a decent bit of possession before their pen...we've had no urgency, no quality, no creativity......pretty dreadful, can't remember their keeper having to make a save.......not sure what the all important stats says, but that was bloody awful....worst I've seen of us all season..
Is it my imagination or does Bakinson spend most of the game wandering around in no mans land just pointing? Today his tackling was poor and he has a habit of losing the ball too often and not bothering to go and get it back. Martin didn't look in the slightest bit interested and there were a couple that didn't shine today but I think we should have grabbed a point from an overall disappointing performance. Now it's back to the drawing board hoping that the possible injuries we got today don't hamper our quest for a higher spot.
My immediate thought after the game was "last time we had to rely on back up manager we won 2 games [ 2nd was with new manager but stated was dependant on them as he had only had a couple of days ] … tonight we played s****
Only 3 players deserved any praise for us IMO....Williams (until his injury), Atkinson (apart from his challenge for the pen) & for a couple of decent saves, Bentley whom kept us in it.. For the rest, it was a really bad night at the office.. I imagine with all the injuries we've picked up, there will have to be some changes v Peterborough
Yet again schoolboy errors killed us again, we are well in control in the 2nd half and Bakinson who has been poor all game tries a ridiculous back heel on the halfway line they break, Atkinson never needed to tackle, the angle was quite tight just force him out wider and it was defendable but he jumped in. In the first half Weimann shoots from a ridiculously acute angle when Martin was totally free ready for a pull back, Weimann never looked up once. It was a poor game, our passing was shocking all game, Palmer was a waste of space when he came on and to add to the insult both our sick notes went off injured. ODowda looked OK, but it's the same old story, we run out of ideas in and around the opponents box, nobody has the ability to thread a pass.
I agree but I would add Pring to the 3 I thought he was good when he came on, Tanner was ok as was ODowda. The rest were woeful.
One thing is for sure the stats wouldn't say what a complete and utter waste of money Palmer is. But hey your hypocrisy knows no bounds, when you quote the amount of chances our opponents create and they are merely stats at the end of the day, nothing nothing less.
More utter blurb from you I see...but hey ho, getting used to it now.. Not sure why you are picking on Palmer, he came on with 20 minutes to go into a piss poor performance by most of our players...If you want to go down mistakes route, Bakinson was a liability, not only the lead up to the pen but caught in possession a few times, which nearly cost us.. No hypocrisy at all...Both sides were dreadful, but yet again, they created more chances than we did..Bentley needed to make a couple of decent saves, where as their keeper could have brought his sleeping bag, needed to open his eyes once that I can recall.... It was so dreadful to watch, the stats say we had 11 shots to their 12....they must have been so piss poor. 23 shots would indicate it was a half decent game, but it was anything but.....as I've said before, stats doesn't always show the true picture of the game, possession is the most misleading stat of all.......you mentioned, we were in well control of the game, but it was with absolutely no threat whatsoever !!
I know it’s very difficult for some to comprehend the use of stats and you are correct they do not always give a full picture of a performance. That is not their primary reason for existing, so to answer your snide comment about ‘all important stats’, they are there to identify areas where teams need to improve. For instance last season we were either bottom or very close to bottom for shots and shots on target, that part of our game has certainly improved. Where we have not improved is the likely hood of scoring, that remains about the same, still piss poor. We have overcome one major flaw in our game by at least having a midfield that can actually compete especially against teams like Millwall who are just let’s just say a little more robust than most, the major flaw that we have not overcome is a midfielder who can play in that midfield without weakening the midfield and create chances in the box by threading a ball into the box, giving chances to 2 strikers mainly having to survive off of high balls into the box (although that crossing has also improved) they are simply not those kind of strikers. You still hold on to the belief that there ‘is a good player’ in Palmer, he’s been with us for almost 4 years, how much longer do we need to wait to see that ‘good player’ arrive?. He scored on Saturday and great he affected a game to the good. But the challenge is take your chances when they come be it 20 minutes or a start, tell me the last game apart from Saturday that Palmer has affected to the good? and again that’s where the ‘all important stats’ come into play, I would suggest that 6 assists in almost 70 games is nowhere near good enough for such an apparently talented player. As for Bakinson he is far too casual in the same mould as Vyner and both are being exposed by their casualness. As for last night you and others quite rightly point out it was a shocking game for both teams, not a great advert. However apart from 2 defensive errors both by Atkinson (one in the first half where his ball watching allowed Afobe a one on one with Bentley, which brought out a great save and the unnecessary challenge for the penalty) Bentley made one other good save from a header in the first half (which I believe was after Baker went off) but apart from that we were pretty comfortable in defence, but once again all of our woes came from individual errors and those errors are killing us and our lack of creativity + poor decision making in promising positions is certainly adding to those woes. IMHO we need a 6ft plus striker for crosses and we certainly need the elusive midfielder who can thread passes into the box but doesn’t weaken the midfield. My posts are only blurb because they do not agree with your blurb.
Pretty much agree with that TBF.. I've never said that stats don't matter, just pointed out, they don't always reflect the true picture of a game.. Juventus v Chelsea is a classic example.....But yes they do have there place. Regarding Palmer....TBF to him, he's not really had much game time and I'm not sure the players around him help with his performances...I've said a few times, he's a confidence player....and I know it's a bit catch 22, but he won't have much confidence if he doesn't play enough..but if he doesn't show brilliance everytime he comes on, he's unlikely to start.. We judge things differently, which we will continue to agree to disagree....You emphasis the importance of individual errors, which to a point I understand to be frustrating, but I'm more concerned about our performances, more often than not, are lacklustre, lack of urgency, lack of creativity, poor awareness, poor anticipation & very predictable, Again, as with Palmer, most of that is having confidence in themselves as well as with one another.. We don't seem to have players able to make or move into space to create really good clear cut chances, Wells on his day can, but rarely does.. We do most of the basics ok, but the quality needed to finish is average at best.. Not sure why we are not giving Semenyo more of a run out.. HNM was missed yet again, we are much poorer without him IMO
Jiffie, When I first called Palmer a show pony and that he'd had 3 or 4 loans in different clubs that didn't lead to a contract, you and 1For were on the same page. Now you berate my 'luvver' at every opportunity and I'm not happy.
Gotta say that was absolutely a **** performance tonight. No attacking flair-No power going forward lame ducks. Bakinson how did he get a full game another poor performance. Wells should have been brought in earlier. Afobe played well-showed our forwards how to attack with the ball.
Palmer has had more than enough chances, 70 of them in 4 years. I don't think it's confidence I think it's more about attitude, somebody posted on here his similarity to JET and I agree. He had had more than enough chances and has never ever showed a consistency. I think ODowda is very close to being in the same boat IMHO, last night he looked ok but needs to stay fit and start show consistency. I understand about performances and of course overall they are important and Atkinson will learn from his mistakes and he has been consistently good all season to be fair to him I am sure, but, individual mistakes are killing results wise and have done all season and the previous 2 seasons, I watched the game with a friend and we both agreed the problem going forward apart from running out of ideas was poor decision making in promising positions but from the halfway to our penalty area it's individual errors by trying to be to clever ala Bakinson last night and it has to stop.
Afobe got into good areas, which did show our forwards how to do it, but his finishing was woeful.. I'm not convinced that Martin is our answer either, put's the effort in, but doesn't seem to have that finishing quality that we so desperately need.. IMO Wells has better finishing qualities................................when he can be arsed!!..............We could do with a Tammy!!
Not my sort of player, but have to say, missed the type of presence he brought to the game...Semenyo needs to step up IMO..
I was teasing a bit, we are lacking cover for Martin, he was poor last night, playing him every game is asking a bit much.
