His science documentary series from the 80s, it is really, really essential viewing despite its age. I've not seen anybody watch a few episodes of Cosmos and not consider Sagan one of the most inspirational scientists of the 20th Century. He discusses everything with such wonder and curiosity and it makes it impossible not to want to buy everything he ever wrote. You don't even need to give a toss about science to love it really.
Theyre all on youtube actually. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8up9DnXV7BM

Epicurus destroyed the need for religion even before the 3 major Abrahamics took their hold on the world.

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"

I mention this to recommend reading some Epicurus, rather than further a religious bashing btw!

I have always thought that if hypothetically there was a god and he was as religion described him, then why would he be so petty that if you did not believe in him he would damn you to an eternity in Hell? I mean that is just not cool.

Also on the topic of Richard Dawkins, The Greatest Show On Earth is a good read as well.

I was horrified when I reached the appendix of The Greatest Show On Earth and read those statistics. The sheer number of people who believe humans and dinosaurs co-existed made my jaw drop.

You're absolutely correct on your first point too. An all knowing and benevolent God would not send a son of his to start a religion that would cause the deaths of billions of innocent people over two thousand years and counting.

I've always thought, if there is a God why not make themself known instead of letting people disbelieve? Also why would they let all religions worship different Gods? Why would they want people worshiping something that doesn't exist?

Anyone who likes fantasy, Brandon Sanderson - The Way of Kings. 1000 pages, meant to be first of about 10 books. Only one published at the moment.

The author is the one who finished the wheel of time series. Also has other good books out.

A religious person would argue that it is because God is testing your faith. To which you could point them towards the countless acts of violence and megalomania and the commanding and condoning of acts of genocide, rape and slavery in their holy book and they would tell you 'ah but they were olden times'. You would ask them why they then thought that such olden ways that they know are wrong should apply today, and they would tell you that it is because God is testing your faith. Then you would facepalm.

Very true they say small things affect small people, so why would the creator of the universe really care if people worship him infact that makes him really small if so, that he needs to be worshipped almost like an out of fad celebrity!!

Also the whole ten commandments thing confuses me, why doesnt he programme us so we can only follow the rules, I know people will say well freedom of choice but its a bit hypocritcal to say you have freedom of choice but you can only follow my rules and if you dont then you go to "hell".

Sorry went off on one there.. Anyway thanks Skalpel I was going to watch season 2 the walking dead, but may watch them now!!

The only response they ever have. No proof of God exists apart from some text made over 2000 years ago that we can't read because no one on the planet actually knows what it means, they just assume they do because they think they see a link to a modern language and assume it must be related.
