I love ventilation, and having a few electronic devices running here in my study I need it! transom window open about 6" So far in the past couple of month's I have had 11 identified moths and maybe a dozen or so unidentified plus a dozen or so micro moth's. Great because I love to have them. However my little band of spiders [ biggest, body a tad smaller than a 5p ] have been fattening up on daddy longlegs... and what prompted me write this was the biggest Daddy longlegs I have ever seen one of its legs is 43+mm [ desk spider got him ] my question is Has anyone SEEN SO MANY indoors and out, we have a mini invasion here, and are they normally the size you expect??
This was on TV the other day saying there is a boom of them. But they not last 2 weeks so won’t be long till you lose them.
Along with numerus earthquakes in Haiti, Mexico, Crete, Melbourne and the volcanic eruption at La Palma. in the past month....I blame it on climate change and the doing ok evolution!!
yes the life span is around 2 weeks and usually spread over 6 weeks ..ish recorded my first one 8th September near Bitton …. on 4th Sept saw a flying ants [ nest ] evacuation quite late in season but was warm late afternoon. STRANGE SUMMER! Did I hear right OCTOBER could be a heat wave … for most of it!
has a web from back of my right hand monitor to edge of window and down to cill .. not a lot of strands . crane fly landed up breaking into it and before could fly away WOLFIE was on to it took about 5 secs to bind it up and disappeared with it behind some paperwork … left a leg dangling on the web body was quite large as well maybe 50mm. I can see "remains of" at the mo … on the cill behind the monitors is a grave yard of about 15 moths and flies … clear it about every 2-3 weeks last time found an ichneumonid …. almost in perfect condition except had been sucked dry! pleasant dreams ….lol
I read somewhere that those flying Daddy Longlegs (Crane Fly is their correct name) are actually the most venomous creature in the world. They have a poison sack with a venom strong enough to kill a human - but they have no method of delivering it - they have no fangs or sting. Could be an urban myth but I've definitely heard it. Now we are well into spider season and my house is full of the little 8ugger5. I am not scared of them - I don't particularly LIKE them and I always use a glass to catch them and throw them into the garden, having been bitten by one once - which wasn't pleasant. Mrs R&W is absolutely terrified of them though.
There seem to be less Crane Flies than there used to be and they were also a bit later arriving this year I thought. Yes, we're well into indoor spider season at home too, and our Box hedge down one side of the back garden has been infested with Box Caterpillars who have literally stripped it bare. Have had a couple of False Widow spiders in the greenhouse too and they actually rear up and want to appear threatening when you go close to them.
You need to be careful of those - they can give you a nasty bite. Some people have even been hospitalised from being bitten by those things. I was bitten by a normal house spider when I lived in Bishopsworth. I put my bare feet into my slippers and felt a painful sting between my toes - I thought I'd stepped on a wasp, but when I shook my slipper out popped a (rather squashed) spider. The sting itself lasted about 6 hours and was like a wasp sting. Not dangerous but not pleasant either! That spider only managed to bite me because of the soft skin between my toes - it it had tried to bite me anywhere else it probably wouldn't have been able to penetrate my skin. However, those False Widows can bite through skin anywhere on a human. Nasty little critters.
On the TV program I saw they said it’s a miff, and confused with a US one. But the bit about fangs and stings with those ones are what you said though. Working from home I watch some ****e on TV now
The False Widows I encountered didn't live to tell the tale but thanks for the note of caution. Never been bitten by a Spider, a Wasp or a Bee, but recently I did put my bare right foot in my outdoor/garden shoes (that I keep outside the back door under cover) and was unpleasantly surprised by a soft squish against my toes, which turned out to be a large Slug !
Sadly I’ve been stun Yuk! For my sins I’ve been stung by wasps, bees, ants and bitten by a spider, multiple dogs and cats - and mice, gerbils and hamsters - and even stung by a jellyfish off the coast of Thailand - now that WAS painful!!!!!
The particular member of the family we see at this time [ Sept ] is most plentiful and biggest …. through out the year other versions are with us .. about 250 -300 sub species in the group. Leather jacket lives in ground hatch's into Cranefly which simply mates and males die females lay eggs on ground adults both become part of the Autumn food chain .. enjoy nature do not kill it …… EDITED so as not to cause stress or confusion
I obviously do more than you …. yo the penny dropped you saw my mail pointing out you have 6 forcasts for midweek fixture In BC you have some wonderful wildlife … missed opportunity, wife unable to fly so will never get to achieve my boyhood dream Calgary …..

this is throw back comment, read and digest what you read...…………….!!! … I reiterated your comment, also pointed out about the false widow spider,, SO actually did read and added comments to the thread … it is also good you watch TV s**** about nature and natural world gives knowledge and keeps brain active .. some say Steven Hawking lasted way way beyond his predicted time because that what he did, observed and had a purpose had an active brain … …..
No you never, you said “climb out your hiding space” I said it is a miff to someone else. I never even mentioned anything about False Widows.
