He's just one of a number of english players hyped up by idiot pundits. He ain't a bad player but he's nowhere near as good as his reputation. This is one of a number of reasons England will always be ****.

For me the most over-rated is Downing

Didn't he catch something whilst here? Something that made him really tired all the time? Considering that he did really well. As for the bollocks about him going round in circles, so does one Mr Tiote (though Scotty did form a perfect circle and Tiote more of a circle drawn freehand by an eleven year old)

Superb first season - let down by team mates/manager second season alongside with the condition he had. Fans far too harsh
Though I do think he is over hyped

Don't get me wrong he's a good ball winner and his drive and work rate are phenomenal, but the way the press and pundits hype him is beyond a joke, especially when better players like Tiote (proved on sunday and the two game against West Ham last season) hardly get a mention.

I loved his work ethic, but felt sorry for him. He seemed to really give it all, but was stuck in a very poor midfield, so he spent most of his time just having to hold the ball while waiting for someone, anyone, to make a run.

That first season was one of the most frustrating I've ever had as a toon fan, we had on paper a very good squad and Emre and Parker in the middle could have been fantastic, but never were. They never ever worked out which would go forward and which would stay back and spent most of their time wandering the centre circle and not supporting our forwards. Moments of brilliance (mainly from Emre) occasionally, but otherwise very very annoying, and we spent the entire season in the bottom half until the last 4-5 games.

He's decent enough but so limited its untrue, but because he grafts and he's English he get plaudits like the ludicrous Player of the Year last season. Tiote does everything he could do plus actually pass further than 5 yards, or at least he could last season!

Does anyone else remember his (perfectly legal) tackle on Joe Cole that made him do a frontflip? <laugh>

I didn't know anybody that didn't like Parker while he was here.

It was more of a square dance he did than go around in circles. Forward, side, back, side, forward. It could be a bit boring at times but he did do it well.

It wasn't untill he broke Jimmy Bullards leg in what appeared to be a reasonably good tackle that he seemed to lose it all and was never the same for us again

He was average on Sunday but thought it really admirable that, after Adebayor put in the first one he kind of told him to calm down and not wipe it in our faces.

    I like him - he's a good character and a hell of a captain.

Hes I agree with the OP in that in his time at Newcastle he was one of the better players, he can break up play and spread the ball about, although one of his strengths is one of his downsides in that he keeps things simple and will do too much passing backwards or sideways.

Miles ahead of Gareth Barry who is a similar type of player...

As some people have said though he seems a good character but the way the press rim him at any opportunity really is starting to make me dislike him!!

he was a total battler and a good leader. i could never knock anybody that puts that much effort into the team. however, i don think that he's overated compared to what some quarters think of him. you'd think he was xavi the way some go on about him. good player yes, great player no.
