Too many complex messages in there for me, not to mention the huge gaping plot-holes and vacant characterisation...

A Clockwork Orange, the book is a thousand times better than the film!
Animal Farm is excellent as well and also Of Mice And Men. Both are short but exceptional!

I'd advise against reading The Road, unless you're into great scenery description and sparse story. It gets you hooked near the end but the first 200 pages are a massive drag of nothingness!

Did my dissertation on Raymond Chandler and American crime fiction then as part of my masters did a module on dystopian fiction. Loved them both.

normally when someone says something like "it was the scariest book some had ever read" it's best to avoid if it's hyped to **** it normally is

I quite liked it, I don't remember feeling bored at the first pages but it's depressing!

Yeah I agree, really not a King fan at all. McCarthy though, I just can't grasp at all where the admiration comes from. His books very literally read like so: "He woke up to a noise. The noise was loud. He went over to his bag and opened the bag and in the bag was his glasses and then he put on his glasses. Then he looked at the window..." He never uses speech marks either which makes reading several pages of 1on1 dialogue confusing if you lose your place. Gets a crapload of praise for somebody who writes like a child.

Seems I am the only one who likes Cormac McCarthy :(. Sure his lack of speech marks are very annoying but I still like his books. Blood Meridian is a fearsome book. I also thought The Road was very good, read it in like a day.

I thought there were some massively thought provoking passages in there, one of the very few books I would re-read.

I'm quite fussy with books, there aren't many that I can get into.

Birdsong by S Faulks is hard going but a great book.

A good friend of mine who is a brilliant writer himself and gives me a lot of recommendations swears by McCarthy for his great storytelling. I just get put off by his writing too easily unfortunately.

But don't you see that Mr Bump is merely representative of man's fragility and self-defeatism throughout history?

I just couldn't stand the beginning where nothing's happening. McCarthy's writing style might have something to do with it, i don't know if he means to or not but he seems to spend way too much time on describing tiny things and absolutely no time on the big picture ie, the story and the characters. The dialogue got really repetitive and i only really got interested when it got to bits where they weren't just walking.

Each to their own though, art's meant to split opinion!

Considered that, but then what does the lampost represent? It is not Hargreaves' style to represent something so huge with an inanimate object.

More likely Mr Bump represents the fact that our life is too full of obstacles (lamposts etc.) making it impossible to go through life without hitting them.
