I generally tend to read fantasy/sci-fi.

Anything by Brandon Sanderson is worth reading, I strongly recommend the first Mistborn trilogy. He does very good fantasy with unique and interesting magic systems.

Also if you are up for a challenge there is always Robert Jordan (and latterly Brandon Sanderson) for the epic Wheel of Time series - very slow but incredible

Reading the Song of Ice and Fire series at the moment (Game of Thrones), which is enjoyable in its own way too.

Quantum Physics is interesting up to a point, that point being that you stupidly do your first degree in it like me...

I read Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front during summer for English Coursework and really enjoyed it. The fact that it's written by a German soldier gives a better perspective, it just shows how they were manipulated and essentially tricked into fighting too.

But yeah, American Psycho, Hunter S Thompson's work as mentioned above are all great reads <ok> I bought an old copy of Kafka's the Trial in a charity shop in York but haven't got round to reading it yet due to schoolwork, I'd studied the first chapter in English in Year 12. I think someone had Kafka as their avatar a while back and I spoke to them about it.. was it AH?

Farenheight 451 (I think it's that), the Trial by Kafka, Swastika Night. I did dystopia last year for English coursework and used Clockwork Orange, those are ones that other people used though from what I can remember <ok>

edit: Animal Farm & Children of Men too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Dystopian_novels)

Kafka <diva>. York has some incredible book shops though, the two I liked the most when I lived there were Twelve Rooms (I think it was called) by the cathedral and another one on Micklegate near the tower.

If you're into war books then get:

With the Old Breed - Eugene Sledge
Helmet for my Pillow - Robert Leckie

(both the autobiographies of the guys in the Pacific series, both brilliant reads)

Personally I didn't like this at all, for the writing style mainly. Bought it for my girlfriend a few years ago and wanted to punch the author in the face many a time. I also can't stand Cormac McCarthy who writes like a 4 year old.
