This. It was the first thought that came to mind as soon as he awarded it. Also, I thought the law regarding penalties was that a player had to be fouled to stop a near certain goal, which was never the case in this instance. Or has the rule been changed?

We're joint top with two home games next, new players settling in and a striker who's getting better every game ...

... Stewart needs support though, he definitely can't play every game and we need a Plan B.

O'Brien, Broadhead or someone else needs to be given a chance.

This may sound crazy but, at Wigan, I'd play Alves at right back and Winchester at CF if Johnson doesn't want to play O'Brien for whatever reason. Broadhead would play behind him for knock-downs and balls played through the channels.

I'd have brought O'Brien on at 2-0 yesterday but trust Johnson to know what he's doing.

There's a weird phenomenon that occurs in football supporters.

I've just watched the entire 90 minutes from yesterday and specifically McGeady and Gooch. McGeady was poor, kept losing the ball and his contribution wasn't great, he almost missed the penalty which was a poor effort.

Gooch put in half a dozen very good crosses, ran into space continually and put in some excellent passes. That obviously doesn't tell the whole story, McGeady's shot tipped over for example, but Gooch generally contributed a lot more imo.

Yet Gooch is being criticised as inconsistent and worse today ...

... it seems that, once a theory is laid down, it sticks

Surely you know the Sunderland way. Pick a scapegoat, stick with it as long as it suits the narrative. I haven’t watched the 90 so I can’t fully comment

That's interesting. I made my comments yesterday after watching the match and came to the opinion that neither for me did that much as part of the front three. Yes there was the odd shot from McGeady but I didn't think Gooch did that much either but happy to be proved wrong and with your commentary seems that he did more than I thought. I wonder if this system suits them especially McGeady. I maybe would like to see McGeady bring used more as an impact sub and maybe AOB who's played wide before being used there offering more of a striking threat

Aye, I watched the full 90 and thought Gooch did well, played a couple of good through balls and decent crosses - I'm still putting my original opinion down to **** commentary on the radio <laugh>. On the flip side, Mcgeady was a bit quiet but could have had a couple of goals but for their keeper making a great save.
Other general thoughts on the game after watching it - Onien was excellent imo. Winchester was also very good as was Cirkin. But, the 2 CHs made a few mistakes that we got away will. Doyle gave a few passes away (I know he will do this from time to time due to the way he plays) and also Wright sliced a clearance which we were lucky their lad couldn't control and it went out.
Keeper was much better yesterday and looked a class act, passing, shot stopping, reflexes; pretty much everything was spot on from him.

No surprise with that, Wright is just not good enough.

His ability is supposed to make up for his slowness but I just don't see it.

The club seemed to want to peddle him in the summer break but LJ wanted to keep him.

It seems being palls with the boss is worth more to LJ than ability.

Not sure what gives you that idea mind? I heard some rumours from certain fans who wanted him gone that he was going, but nothing from club or anywhere else for that matter

Johnson has been backed to the hilt ...

... I doubt he'll jeopardise promotion with daft games, etc.

A really frustrating way to drop two points, I imagine the majority of us expected to see it out making it 2-0 with just 15 mins to go. The first one Wright comes out of the line and allows the space for their lad to run into, sloppy defending. The penalty is incredibly soft for me and its the kind of thing that goes on from pretty much every corner in any given game in the EFL.

Two home games coming up to get back on track though!

Everyone is entitled to an opinion to make of players performance levels and mark accordingly but strangely enough if you aggregate them they make a bit more sense , I don’t think anyone would dispute Hoffmann our new keeper and Stewart our talisman should be at the top marks , for those at the top of the charts you then have to look at the worst performers and no surprises that we find Bailey Wright who I thought had a very poor game and could be faulted in some capacity for both goals conceded . Lyndon Gooch continues to be an enigma , excellent in the game against Wigan but hitty missy in subsequent games , he must be in danger of losing his place unless he ups his game and starts to chip in with goals his lack of consistency frustrates me god knows how LJ feels - so much potential but so inconsistent.

Just watching the highlights and Wright goes to his man, looks like it was winchester who lost his for their first goal. Could be wrong though
