So, this is spurious, but I was thinking during the match today, would the likes of Owers and Armstrong get into the team today? Obviously, they played at a higher level, but has football moved on so far that they wouldn't? For example, I loved Brian Atkinson when I was a kid, I'm not sure he was that good, defo had a canny shot on him, but is he better than Embleton!? I dunno, it's really hard to judge.
Dont forget Atkinson hit that corner! I think Armstrong would play. In my opinion he was better than people gave him credit for. He could go box to box and play a bit. Would have him instead of 09 personally in that role, but admitting we were 442 back then. Owers was a player who never seemed to fit one role. Bit like Winchester maybe. One of them from that era I always liked was Pascoe. Wouldnt mind him on the right now.
I thought Pascoe was great! Was he though? Best of a bad bunch? To be honest, the generation I really remember vividly was just after that relegation...Don Goodman (La god), Phil Gray, Craig Russell, Dicky Ord etc.
I always remembered him wide left although he was never a winger. Don't think he would be a holding midfielder these days, maybe more of a box to box or play in the Embleton role. Was a good header of the ball as Chelsea found out in 92.
Interesting question op. Having started watching the lads with Owers, Pascoe and co I’ve no idea if they would be this level nowadays or higher. Game has moved on a lot in some ways and the top flight now is undoubtedly of a higher standard being more a global league than a National one. So they may be on similar level to L1. Not a clue tbh.
Got a txt off my lad today saying a Liverpool scout said to him he'd had a good game at a match. He's obviously made up and so am I for him but he'll probably never make it now. 30 years ago he might of got a contract with Accrington Stanley.
Surely that's a good sign if a top scout is complimenting him, he wouldn't bother saying it if it wasn't true.
Owers and Pascoe were too good for this league, worst team now in Sunderland's history at the minute that's a fact.
Just found the ignore button for this guy....Its difficult to read such drivel when others are trying hard to contribute to a decent conversation, he really does spout off some s hit

The medical back up and physio faccilities, the Academy, all this makes the cuurent players just a bit better than the former ones. But it alos makes it impossible to compare. All the same, it's hard to see 'One Good Game, Gordon Armstrong' as being any more use now than he was then.
He's getting on for 25 now. He stopped playing at 16, dabbled again and started mebeez a year ago. Mind, he thinks he's fookin Roy Keane now
Monty..... I really cannot deal with the s hit he posts when people are trying to have a regular discussions.
Oh cheers You sweet talkin bastid I was talking to the lad about the scout the other day, apparently he was there to watch some young lad but commented to mine "well played mate, if you was fit you'd be a good player". I've noticed he's been going the gym more now, as well as his head swelling like a balloon Unfortunately he's had a txt saying the team he plays for has folded
